OXFORD UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

CONSULTANTIN PAEDIATRIC ENDOCRINOLOGY AND DIABETES

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country and enjoys a national reputation for the quality of its services in healthcare. The Trust is comprised of four hospitals: the John Radcliffe Hospital including the Children’s Hospital, Churchill Hospital, and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre are all situated in Headington, Oxford. The Horton General Hospital is in Banbury.

Principal Activities

The post holder's duties will be primarily in the Oxford Children’s Hospital and the Horton Hospital, Banbury but it is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.

Clinical

The unit provides a mixed secondary and tertiary paediatric service to Oxfordshire and a tertiary paediatric endocrinology service to the Thames Valley and Swindon (total population more than 2 million).

The Paediatric endocrine service is mostly an outpatient speciality with clinics being held in the Paediatric out-patient department of the Oxford Children’s Hospital and Endocrinology Outreach Clinics in Milton Keynes, Aylesbury, Reading and Swindon.

At the Children’s Hospital, in addition to general paediatric endocrinology clinics, there are joint clinics for Late Effects of Childhood Malignancy, Disorders of Sexual Development and Transition to Adult Services. Two half day specialist clinics per year are held with colleagues from Birmingham for children with complex OI. A Turner Transition Clinic is held twice a year. A half day metabolic clinic is held eight times a year. The metabolic clinic predominantly sees dietary controlled conditions, for example, MCAD deficiency and galactosaemia. The patients with MCAD deficiency are under shared care with GOSH metabolic centre. Any complicated metabolic conditions are managed in their entirety by GOSH. No additional training in metabolic medicine is considered necessary for this role.

The paediatric diabetes service is mostly an outpatient speciality providing a comprehensive paediatric diabetes service to Oxfordshire. Clinics are held in the paediatric out-patient department of the Oxford Children’s Hospital, at the Horton Hospital in Banbury; transition clinics are held at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, and at the Horton Hospital in Banbury. Specialist clinics are held with adult colleagues for children with diabetes undertaking high level sporting activities.

Inpatients in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes are managed on the Children’s ward at the Children’s Hospital, on the adolescent unit and the neonatal and paediatric intensive care units. There is a dedicated Day Ward where most of the specialist investigations are undertaken.

There are valuable relationships with other paediatric sub-specialties and the University Department of Child Health.

The post holder will work with three consultant colleagues (one “retired and returned”) to provide a comprehensive paediatric endocrine service and an additional consultant colleague to provide a comprehensive diabetes service to Oxfordshire, as well as a colleague with an interest in diabetes to provide diabetes services in Banbury. The post holder will contribute to the Consultant Paediatric Endocrinology on call service on a 1 in 4 basis and the Consultant Paediatric Diabetes on call service on a 1 in 5 basis. In addition, the post holder will contribute to the telephone advice service out of hours for families and young people with diabetes on a 1 in 7 basis.
