The Hospital

The post is based in Oxford but may involve a rotation to another unit in the future.

The West Wing opened in January 2007. The hospital provides a number of acute, rehabilitation and specialist clinical services, including regional specialities. These include ophthalmology, ENT, plastic and reconstructive surgery and neurosciences (neurology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, neuroradiology), The Oxford Centre of Enablement, which is located on the Nuffield Orthopaedic site, provides services for patients suffering from stroke and head injuries. The hospital has some 290 beds and employs approximately 1,300 staff.

The Department

Initiated by Sir Hugh Cairns, the Oxford Regional Neurosurgery Unit has developed to offer a fully comprehensive service.

Modern theatres, ITU facilities and paediatric beds enable the department to look after both paediatric and adult patient with all types of neurosurgical problems.

In addition to intracranial, vascular and tumour surgery, there is expertise in the fields of functional surgery, epilepsy, pituitary surgery and craniofacial surgery. There is a great interest in all types of spinal disorders, including those of rheumatiod disease of the neck, and spinal tumours.

DUTIES OF THE POST

**1. a)Principal Responsibilities**:
The care of patients on the wards, in the theatres and at out-patient clinics as appropriate to the grade of the post and under the direction of the consultants responsible, involving:
Operating sessions

Attendance at ward rounds and routine ward work

Outpatient clinics

This whole-time post is based at the West Wing, John Radcliffe Hospital with occasional visits to peripheral outpatient clinics in the region.

Specialist Trainees will be expected to contribute to the assessment of junior colleagues. Specialist Trainees will be familiar with the assessment process used in the ISCP. Specific training will be made available from the Postgraduate Centre.

1. c)Description of Working Pattern

5 Specialist Trainees and 5 Fellows work a FULL shift rota.

1. TeachingThe Specialist Trainees will take part in teaching and training of medical students and nursing staff as necessary.
1. Administration/Management

Maintenance of patient records, the completion of summaries and the writing of letters etc., as appropriate.

So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties the postholder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.

Practitioners will be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances without additional remuneration but may be granted time off in lieu at the discretion of the Trust. Commitments arising in such circumstances however are exceptional and practitioners should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
