**Job summary**:
DWP Policy Group (PG) consists of around 1400 people managed through 10 Directorates and based mainly across 3 Policy Hubs in London, Leeds and Sheffield.

The PG Head of Office runs the private office for the three PG Directors-General: Sophie Dean and Katherine Green who are the jobshare DG for Labour Market Policy and Implementation; and Katie Farrington who is DG for Disability, Health and Pensions. The Head of Office works closely with the DGs and Directors to lead the Group. The DG Private Office team consists of two Private Secretaries, two Assistant Private Secretaries and two Diary Managers. The team is part of PG’s Corporate Support and Development Division.

**Key tasks**

**Leadership**
- Taking a lead role with the DGs in setting the strategic direction, purpose and priorities for Policy Group. Managing decisions on major headcount, resourcing, senior recruitment and restructuring challenges with the DGS.
- Advising and supporting the DGs with oversight of PG and delivery of objectives. Acting as a bridge between the PG DGs, PG Directors and senior stakeholders across the department.
- Working with DGs to understand and progress their personal priorities for our Group, our People and our ways of working, supporting them to lead PG through regular communication and staff interaction, ensuring our Hubs are great places to work and delivering Staff Awaydays and our Race Action Plan.
- Taking a lead role working with PG Directors to ensure that PG Executive Team discusses significant policy, strategy and business matters and that decisions are made in a timely and efficient way.

**Delivery**
- Ensuring that DGs are able to take a joined-up approach to significant matters common to all of them and cross-cutting for PG (such as headcount and fiscal exercises). Taking a lead on matters relating to the running of PG, such as organising away days and the annual Excellence Awards.
- Identifying the main issues in complex problems, clarifying understanding and stakeholder expectations, and rapidly analyse problems. Using this to provide the best possible advice, options and recommendations to DGs to help them drive forward their priorities, usually on matters with a high level of political exposure or of a potentially divisive nature.
- Using relationships, judgement and understanding of the wider context to lead and advise on delivery of effective, sensitive and high-quality DG communications to the rest of PG.

**Stakeholder management**
- Building strong relationships with the offices of other DWP senior officials to support the PG DGs to achieve their objectives.
- Acting as the public face of PG on behalf of the DGs, fronting collaborative working across PG and DWP on challenging policy and corporate matters with senior officials and stakeholders.

Actively managing the reputation and corporate standing of PG within the department and on behalf of DGs; using judgement to step up rapidly into trouble-shooting mode when acute risks arise.

**Team management**
- Leading the PG DG Private Office team of six people to create a motivated and high performing team, ensuring that it works effectively in support of the DGs - bringing strong and proactive management and rapidly resolving performance.
- Bringing oversight to DGPO as a whole to ensure there are no gaps between DG portfolios so that there is “One Policy Group”. Creating space for G7 PPSs to be the front face of their respective DGs’ business portfolios, in order to focus on longer-term changes and improvements across the office as a whole.

The Head Of Office role may frequently involve working long and flexible hours which is reflected in the payment of a Private Secretary Allowance.
