Department Overview

Pfizer Anti-infectives is a dynamic and highly diverse business with unique opportunities for growth. Starting with our pioneering work on penicillin in the 1940s, we have a long and proud heritage of addressing evolving infectious disease challenges.

Infections can touch us all, at any age and in any country. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought this to light more than ever. Pfizer offers the industry’s largest and most diverse portfolio of anti-infectives and continues to invest in novel treatments for infectious diseases. The aim is to address the greatest patient medical needs and partner with the infectious disease community to provide solutions that go beyond the medicine and offer innovative surveillance tools, shape the policy environment and support stewardship and education programs that help to preserve the efficacy of the antimicrobials we already have available

Our strategic intent is to make a meaningful contribution to improving global health through:

- Bringing critical anti-Infective options to patients and physicians
- Leveraging our expertise and capabilities and working closely with the infectious disease community to address antimicrobial resistance through dynamic stewardship, global policy leadership and innovative surveillance tools.

What can I achieve and what will I be accountable for whilst completing a placement at Pfizer?

You will have the opportunity to work with and assist the medical team on various projects aimed at educating and empowering healthcare professionals and others on the value of Anti-infectives, the importance of Antimicrobial Stewardship and tackling Antimicrobial Resistance.

You will develop a multitude of skills including:

- Communication and interpersonal skills through liaising with colleagues and external stakeholders
- Organisational and project management skills through working on a variety of projects
- Presentation skills by discussing your work at meetings
- Teamwork skills through your role in various matrix teams.

It is also a fantastic way to obtain a better understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and the types of roles it has to offer.

Other responsibilities will include:

- Involvement in medical team projects within the anti-infective therapy area working with other cross-functional teams when appropriate. This will include planning and delivering educational projects for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Helping the medical team to stay abreast of relevant published literature and developments in the anti-infective therapy area, by reviewing and summarising key information.
- Helping the medical team in activities related to improving awareness of the pharmaceutical industry (ABPI) code of practice and other compliance related processes.
- Assist the Medical team with key projects and deliverables aligned with the medical strategy. For instance, this may include projects relating to data analysis and presentation, developing innovative antimicrobial resistance surveillance tools and educational offerings for the healthcare community.

What other opportunities and benefits do Pfizer offer?

There may be opportunities to work with people from other departments including fellow undergraduate trainees. For instance, this may involve collaborating with other trainees and colleagues in various projects; previous students have worked with marketing, corporate affairs and global teams on educational projects and also develop skills in medical writing, data analysis and communicating complex scientific data.
