The post-holder will work with other members of Radiation Science Services (RSS) to provide a diagnostic radiation imaging and radiation protection service as required under the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017. RSS provide a service to all departments within UHBW using ionising radiation, and to external customers in the region.

The post holder will participate in the quality assurance service for radiation imaging equipment. They will contribute to the development of methods and protocols to evaluate radiation imaging technologies. They will be responsible, with others, for providing a dosimetry service for staff and the environment, and will undertake dose audits.

UHBW is a teaching hospital and the post-holder will participate in the supervising and training of less experienced staff, students and trainees.
- To participate in the physics quality assurance service for radiation imaging and associated equipment
- Plan and organise routine radiation protection and quality assurance surveys
- Perform accurate and detailed measurements on a range of x-ray and imaging equipment. To analyse these measurements using Excel spreadsheets and produce reports
- Discuss results with other physicists and technologists and communicate the results of quality assurance tests to radiographers and other staff
- Contribute to the development of methods and protocols to evaluate new and existing radiation imaging technologies guided by legislative requirements and national guidelines
- To be responsible for providing, with others, a staff dose monitoring service. This involves
- liaising with external approved dosimetry services
- planning and organising the distribution, collection and return of monitors to the approved dosimetry services for dose estimation
- collating dosimetry reports for the Radiation Protection Advisers and Radiation Protection Committees
- To participate in the systems to measure and assess patient, staff and environmental radiation doses
- Schedule environmental dose surveys as required by the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17)
- Become familiar with thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) which will include the calibration and reading of small thermoluminescent dosemeters for which a degree of manual dexterity will be required.
