Summary

We are seeking a customer-focused and empathic individual to join us as a Domestic Abuse Housing Advisor.

Our Housing Solutions Team, in response to the Domestic Abuse Bill 2020, has created a new pilot role to provide a single point of access to victims and children fleeing domestic abuse.

**Fixed Term - 12 months.**

Our county wide Housing Solutions Service provides genuine alternative options to homelessness through the provision of specialist advice for victims of domestic abuse. In this vital role you will not just deal with homelessness when it happens, you will proactively seek to prevent it.

**About the role**

As part of a busy front-line team operating a telephone advice service across Wiltshire, you will conduct initial interviews to assess the client's needs and risk of harm through domestic abuse.

This will involve a comprehensive assessment of their circumstances which will allow you, working with the client, to draw up a Personalised Housing Plan which will set out the reasonable steps both Wiltshire Council and the client need to take to address the risk of homelessness.

Collaborating with colleagues and partners, you will follow the progress of each case and continue to investigate and support. Should the work fail to resolve the client's housing situation, you will be expected to make a formal legal decision on what duty, if any, may be owed. This will include decisions around emergency accommodation.

**About you**

You will be customer-focused, empathetic, and creative with a commitment to working in partnership with internal and external contacts to ensure a high quality and efficient service.

You will have an understanding of domestic abuse issues, as well as experience of working in a multi-agency approach to safeguard victims and children who have experienced domestic abuse. The role will be to work to provide them with safe, secure, and sustainable accommodation.

The service is fast paced and deals with challenging, complex and difficult clients at, so this role isn’t for everyone. You will need to demonstrate excellent conversation management and coaching skills to build up a positive rapport with clients that motivates them to take responsibility for their situation and work with the Council and other agencies.

Empathy and understanding are key to building relationships, and this is about helping people when they are in crisis, so we are looking for strong people skills, enquiring and curious minds and ability to communicate effectively.

As a Housing Advisor, you will have knowledge of tenancy and homelessness laws, along with experience of managing a demanding caseload with competing demands on your time.

You will also need to have experience of working in a multi-agency way and understanding the process of safeguarding referrals within both Wiltshire and external counties. As part of your role, you will be attending multi-agency forums and conferences to reduce risks of domestic abuse to victims and children and work to ensure that the Housing Options Team are providing the very highest level of service to victims. This is very much a joined-up role to compliment and work alongside other services.

You should be highly literate and numerate with excellent communication, organisational, IT skills and a natural aptitude for dealing with any situation.
