An exciting opportunity has arisen once again within the Adult Critical care Outreach Team at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH). As one of the largest Trusts in the UK the Critical care Outreach Team provides a diverse and comprehensive CCOT service to all adult patients within NUH which includes specialties such as: Neurosurgery, Haematology, Major Trauma, Renal and Infectious diseases.

The Critical Care Outreach Team (CCOT) at NUH is a highly regarded team who provide a Trust wide resource to more than 80 wards and clinical areas. The team is a multi-professional team consisting of highly experienced and skilled: Band 7 and 6 nurses, specialised physiotherapists and CCOT assistants. The team provides ward based advanced clinical assessments, patient interventions and develop management plans with the goal to halt or reverse clinical deterioration of the critically ill patient or ensure patients have rapid access and transfer to the Critical Care environment ensuring improved outcomes and patient experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The CCOT team provides a 24/7 service, 365 days a year across both City and Queens’s campuses. The post holders will therefore be expected to work a combination of day and night shifts.

All staff work across both campuses in order to provide a truly flexible service to meets the ever-changing needs of the critically ill/ deteriorating ward patient throughout NUH. This makes this role a truly exciting job unlike any other.

Applicants should have a minimum of 4 years’ experience at Band 5 within the acute setting, ideally 1 of which should be within a critical care area.

The band 6 CCOT role requires the individual to have excellent communication skills to be able to present and receive complex information and escalate information to the CCOT band 7 and MDT. In addition you will need to demonstrate the ability to use critical care skills outside of the critical care environment and respond to, prioritise and analyse complex problems and situations to ensure effective interventions and timely escalation is implemented.

The post holder must be willing to develop an extensive knowledge of common clinical situations encountered within the range of specialties across the Trust as well as providing both formal and informal teaching to staff at all levels and contributing to the on-going development of the service.

You will be supported with a formal induction and training programme. All members of the CCOT are expected to complete specific competencies related to the role as part of their development. There will be opportunities for additional training and education, and you will be supported by experienced Band 7 CCOT Clinical Nurse Educator and the CCOT lead. Specific Band 6 objectives are also in place to ensure career progression and opportunities within the team.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
- Current level one NMC registration or registration with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists
- Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria
- Possession of a mentoring course
- Diploma or degree in health/ nursing/ physiotherapy related studies
- Teaching and Assessing Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
- significant experience at Band 5 within the acute setting, ideally 1 of which would be within critical care/ acute care setting
- Evidence of ability to utilise critical care skills outside of critical care environment
- Evidence of appropriate delegation, support and supervision of peers and junior staff

Desirable criteria
- Providing staff with feedback on their individual performance
- Understanding of conflict management skills
- Evidence of mangement and leadership skills

Communication and relationship

Essential criteria
- Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
- Produce timely, accurate written/ electronic records and documents
- Can minimise interpersonal conflict and barriers to communication
