**The purpose of the role**: To promote safe and appropriate transfusion practice throughout the Trust. To be a key member of the Trust's Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT). To support the development and implementation of the policies of the Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC). After appropriate training: to exercise high levels of judgement, discretion, and decision-making in clinical care, to provide specialist expertise and advice on blood transfusion issues. To participate in fulfilling blood transfusion quality and safety regulations and directives enabling the Trust to meet the requirements of a blood establishment, licensing, clinical governance, risk management standards and UKAS Accreditation. Education, training and assessment of nursing, medical and multidisciplinary staff in the transfusion process.

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Monitor the appropriateness of blood and blood component usage in association with the blood transfusion laboratory via the use of audit methods. Under supervision or following appropriate training provide specialised transfusion advice, which contributes to the care of patients. Provide an effective link between the Transfusion Laboratory and medical/nursing staff so that problems and adverse incidents can be fully investigated. After appropriate training to act as a resource to medical and nursing staff, supporting, and giving advice/information on aspects of transfusion practice. Work with blood transfusion laboratory staff and associated teams to manage operational issues relating to the remote blood issue system.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENTS

Ensure that patients complaints are handled on accordance with the Trusts Complaints policy after appropriate training. In line with Trust policy and Caldicott / Data Protection Act requirements, maintain patient confidentiality.RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENTInvestigate and develop ways of reducing blood and blood component use in a safe cost-effective manner. To monitor and improve standards of care via audit, evidence-based practice, and research. Work with other members of the transfusion team to help develop transfusion standards that improve quality of the transfusion service offered to patients. Participate in Serious Hazards of Transfusion reporting or analysis as required. Participate in the development of multidisciplinary audit of transfusion practice, perform audits and work with HTC and the HTT to improve the quality and safety of the service provided. Utilise the current evidence and best practice in all areas of clinical work. Liaise with key staff to help develop transfusion standards that improve the quality of the Transfusion service offered to patients. In collaboration with Blood bank ensure that non-compliance with statutory requirements for traceability is followed up, monitored, and escalated appropriately. Contribute to and update policies / guidelines / protocols for blood transfusion With the Lead TP, plan and implement evidence-based protocol and guidelines covering all aspects of the transfusion of blood and blood products and ensure these guidelines are effectively disseminated. In conjunction with the Lead Transfusion Practitioner review and re-issue protocols and guidelines as and when required. Assist in formulating long term strategy plans for blood usage to ensure adequate supplies of blood and blood products in times of national shortage.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL AND PHYSICAL RESOURCESProduce and update Transfusion information on the Transfusion laboratory Intranet site. Ensure the related patient information leaflets are available in clinical areas.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR LEADING AND MANAGING
