**Harm Reduction Volunteer**
Forward Leeds is the alcohol and drug service in Leeds for adults, young people and families. Forward Leeds is delivered by 4 services in partnership, led by Humankind.
This exciting volunteer role would suit someone with an empathetic, non-judgmental attitude who can build strong working relationships with others. This is a fantastic opportunity to get hands on experience in a drug and alcohol service and put your passion for supporting and advocating for vulnerable people to great use.
The work of the Hep C Team includes:
- Reduce stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs. Treating people with dignity and respect.
- Provide harm reduction advice in relation to the substances people who access the service are using.
- Provide equipment that meets national best practice standards.
- Raise awareness about how to reduce the risk of drug related harms including injection site infections, overdoses and how to manage them.
- Promote the use of take-home Naloxone (THN) and training how to use Naloxone.
- Carry out dry blood spot testing (DBST) and pathway into Hepatitis C treatment to reduce transmission of blood-borne viruses (BBVs).
- Promote and facilitate referrals to additional sources of support and advice as needed.
Details of the role / tasks
There are 3 vacancies for this post. 1 at Irford House Seacroft, 1 at Kirkgate in Leeds City Centre, 1 at Armley.
Volunteers in this role will:
- Support the team to provide a welcoming, inclusive and accessible service
- Become familiar with injecting and harm reduction equipment and issue these as appropriate
- Provide harm reduction information
- Maintain a high level of service delivery guided by our Policy & Procedures
- Record accurately the amount of equipment distributed and returned
- Feedback and communicate with the team and participate in debriefs / meetings as required
- Take part in induction, mandatory training and relevant ongoing training (this includes a monthly training session with the city wide team)
- Report any risk or safeguarding issues to a named person
- Maintain appropriate boundaries at all times
- Ensure confidentiality at all times
- Ensure the environment is kept clean and tidy
- Perform other duties which may be requested, required or directed and which are within the person’s capabilities and are reasonable.
Volunteers will be fully trained, inducted and supported to work in the Needle Syringe Programmes where service users can get new injecting equipment, return used needles for safe disposal and get advice on safer injecting and harm reduction.
