Alongside our worshipping congregation, we now have a busy and thriving community venue which is used seven days a week for everything from a dementia cafe, community choirs, pilates, beer festivals, craft fairs, toddler groups & concerts to ‘BBC Any Questions’. Over the last year we have introduced ChurchSuite as our new database and booking system, launched a new website and introduced MailChimp for our newsletters. We have also just launched our strategic plan for the next five years which states that

Over the last year we have developed a good range of community users and a robust system for booking the space using ChurchSuite. This year we are building on these developments by creating a new role of Operations Officer, which will report to the Venue Manager. Alongside these roles we also have a Church Administrator who supports our Team Rector and Churchwardens to ensure the smooth running of the church and to support its congregational life.

Together with our Venue Manager, our Operations Officer will ensure the smooth running of the church building. They will be responsible for the care, maintenance and preparation of the building to enable the effective use of our shared space by church and community users. In so doing, they will help to deliver on our strategic plan and fulfil our desire to be a flourishing church offering hospitality for cultural events and community activities in response to local and global needs. They will be flexible and well organised, working creatively with members of the congregation, volunteers and external users. They will have a positive can-do attitude to problem solving in a small-scale voluntary environment.

**Overall purpose of Job**

To be responsible for the care, maintenance and preparation of the building to enable the effective use of our shared space by church and community users. In so doing, they will help to deliver on our strategic plan and fulfil our desire to be a flourishing church offering hospitality for cultural events and community activities in response to local and global needs.

**Operations Officer Responsibilities**:
To maintain the space as a welcoming venue
- To act as keyholder for the building opening and locking daily
- To maintain tidiness of the church space
- To ensure the church is ready for users on a daily basis
- To ensure the prayer space is a tidy and welcoming space
- To resolve immediate maintenance issues; lighting, toilets, bins, etc.
- To inform venue manager of repair requirements
- To identify and undertake minor repairs, as agreed with line manager
- To undertake annual and other regular safety checks
- To liaise with Church Administrator to order consumables as required
- To be a polite, professional presence at all times, reflecting the values of the Church.

To support external bookings and congregational events
- To brief users on the space, servery, lighting, A/V equipment as per the booking.
- To ensure venue is left clean and tidy
- To set-up screens, projectors & necessary A/V, as per booking

To enable creative worship by preparing church furniture including chairs, altar and lecterns are laid out according to agreed layouts.
- To prepare chairs, altar & other furniture for midweek services
- To prepare chairs, altar and other furniture for Sunday services
- To prepare furniture for baptisms, wedding & funerals
- To prepare for school services and rehearsals (especially Christmas, Easter & Harvest services)
- To set-up screens, projectors & necessary A/V, as required

To undertake other duties commensurate with the job purpose.
- To work with other staff to deliver on our safeguarding policies and procedures.
- To work flexibly at busy periods, ensuring that we deliver on our mission
- To provide holiday cover for the church administrator and venue manager, as agreed with your line manager
- To be an excellent ambassador for the Church at all times
- To provide day to day back up as required to the venue manager and Church administrator

**General - Essential**
- A commitment to reflect the inclusive, Christian ethos of St Philip and St James in all dealings with Church volunteers, congregation members, venue users and visitors.
- The physical ability and endurance to move furniture and equipment daily, including via staircases
- Ability to work unsociable hours, including weekends and evenings
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to work to weekly deadlines and plan work accordingly
