International Policy Officer

London, United Kingdom Academy of Medical Sciences Full time

**Salary: starting from £33,426 + Benefits (possible to increase salary via incremental steps in the first 12 months)**

**Role duration: Permanent. Offered as full time.**

As a key member of the Academy’s close-knit policy team, the international policy officer will support our international policy activities in low and-middle-income countries (LMICs), building on the recent success of the Academy’s previous global health policy workshops in LMICs. The International Policy Officer will help to deliver three global health policy workshops per year, which will convene together experts from the UK and LMICs to address key global health research issues and beyond.

These themes may explore global health topics including digital health, pandemics, genomics, pathogen detection, biosecurity, and AMR, as well as broader themes such as research capacity and systems and climate change. The policy officer will work with the senior manager to narrow the focus, through consultation with our Fellows and Vice President, International and other stakeholders.

Working with our partner countries (often medical and/or science Academies), the International Policy Officer will help develop and deliver these workshops; develop workshop reports that will include suggested next steps to influence global and national policies related to these key global health research challenges; and draft dissemination plans to achieve the highest impact possible.

On occasion, the post holder may be called to support policy activities, such as longer-term policy projects, developing briefing papers, position statements and consultation responses and scoping a range of topics and activities, to support our strategic objective to ‘work globally with our partners to increase the Academy’s impact on global health’.

You’ll have a real opportunity to make a difference, working with a range of stakeholders to tackle some of the most significant global health challenges faced by the UK and our partner countries. We are looking for somebody who is committed to improving health for all, has strong analytical skills, the ability to summarise complex information, and thrives on working with others to produce high quality outputs.

Interviews will be held on 7 and 8 September 2023.

**Requirements**:
**About the role - Key accountablities**:
1. Supporting the Senior International Policy Manager to deliver a series of policy workshops, aimed at working with international partners to consider how scientific evidence can help address key global health challenges in low and middle income countries. This will include: working with Academy Fellows and other experts to develop the agendas and identify relevant stakeholders; organising event logistics; preparing the necessary supporting materials; and supporting the drafting of meeting reports and their dissemination.

2. Supporting the Senior International Policy Manager, ensuring that organisation and delivery of the policy workshops and engagement with our international partners informs the work of the rest of the policy team and the wider Academy, and provides an opportunity to promote the Academy’s policy positions and broader activities.

3. Maintaining an excellent understanding of the policy landscape by monitoring developments and key policy issues. Identifying and researching potential new areas of policy work.

4. Maintaining and developing an effective network of contacts across the sector (including our Fellows) to inform the Academy’s major international policy activities, and to increase the impact of our work.

5. Contributing to the evaluation of the policy team’s activities and the development of new ways of working - particularly with respect to events.

6. Maintaining relevant areas of the website; liaising with Communications staff to ensure internal and external engagement with the Academy’s policy work, including through the use of new media.

7. Occasionally assisting with projects associated with the Academy’s other international policy activities. This could include developing consultation responses or statements, scoping and organizing workshops or roundtables, drafting reports, and supporting the Academy’s Vice President International in their activities.

8. Occasionally supervising policy interns (normally PhD students who join the Academy for 3 months).

**About you - what you bring to the role.**
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytic skills and experience of collating evidence from different sources
- Ability to manage multiple projects in parallel with support from the Senior International Policy Manager
- Knowledge of the global science/health policy landscape
- Running successful international events
- Able to build and maintain effective relationships with key internal and external contacts
- Attention to detail
- Able to harness the benefits of working in teams, including across different departments and organisations
