**Job summary**:
The Trade Policy, Implementation and Negotiations Group is best known for negotiating free trade agreements around the world, from our first "from scratch" agreements with Australia and New Zealand, to digital trade agreements with Singapore and Ukraine, to mutual recognition agreements (for example with the US and Switzerland). The Group's scope recently expanded with new responsibilities for the goods and services aspects of the Trade and Co-operation Agreement with the EU following the formation of the Department for Business and Trade.

This role sits in one of the negotiation teams in the Group, tasked with modernising and upgrading the existing trading relationship with Switzerland - one of the UK’s most significant trading partners.

As the Head of Communications, Engagement and Delivery, you will work alongside the Chief Negotiator to ensure the successful delivery of trade negotiations in the UK, Switzerland and virtually. You will lead a team responsible for designing and implementing value-adding comms and engagement activity with a wide range of stakeholders across Government, the UK and internationally. You will make sure that stakeholder insights shape the negotiation strategy and that comms supports wider negotiation messaging.

Whilst initially leading work on the Switzerland Free Trade Agreement (FTA), it is anticipated that you will work in the same capacity across another negotiation in addition to Switzerland, which is being led by the same Chief Negotiator.

Trade negotiations are one of the most fascinating and dynamic areas of government international or economic policy. If you have the desire, skills and experience to contribute to the UK achieving great results through trade negotiations, we would very much like to hear from you.

**Job description**:
This Grade 6 role will provide leadership and direction within the UK-Switzerland Negotiation Team, ensuring the effective delivery of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations with Switzerland. Working alongside the Chief and Deputy Chief Negotiator, you’ll ensure the UK is best equipped to maximise the opportunities arising from renegotiations. Key responsibilities include:

- Leading the comms, engagement and planning function of the team, ensuring that individuals have clear responsibilities, that work is of high quality and that there is a culture of development and well-being embedded within the team.
- Ensuring the successful delivery of virtual and in-person rounds, and other key negotiation activity. This includes being responsible for the smooth running and logistics of negotiations, taking into account value for money. You will work across negotiation teams to plan negotiation activity alongside other FTA milestones in the Department for Business and Trade's (DBT’s) programme.
- Setting the direction and delivering stakeholder engagement, and making sure that sectoral and business insights are identified and taken into account in the negotiations. This includes engagement with businesses, Parliamentarians and other key stakeholders. You will need to ensure engagement strategies reflect the progress of negotiations and tailor activity to be delivered by the team, Ministers and others involved in negotiations.
- Overseeing communications activity, including working with Press Office and the Departmental communications function. You will ensure the team delivers high quality briefings and responses to Parliamentary Question's (PQs) and Freedom of Information's (FOIs) and that there is a coherent approach to messaging, working across Whitehall and with international counterparts as required.
- Being responsible for the team’s governance and reporting activity, making sure that the right connections are forged across the team’s work and putting in place mechanisms to assure the Chief Negotiator on progress.
- Being flexible to wider requirements across the directorate and the group, which could see you supporting additional priority activity as required.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Criteria**
- Track record in providing supportive and flexible team leadership, including developing staff, managing resilience and wellbeing and setting direction.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to tailor approach and messaging for a wide range of internal and external stakeh
