Birmingham, United Kingdom Norton Hall Children & Family Centre Full time

Job Summary:
Norton Hall Children and Family Centre, a community-based charity in Birmingham, is seeking a dedicated Support Worker to join our team. As a parent support worker in a diverse community, your role would be to provide essential support to both children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and their parents who may be experiencing mental health challenges. Your primary responsibility would be to offer guidance, resources, and emotional support to parents, empowering them to navigate the unique challenges they may face in raising a child with SEND while also managing their own mental health.

Additionally, you would play a crucial role in advocating for the rights and needs of children with SEND within the community. This may involve collaborating with other professionals, such as healthcare providers, educators, and social workers, to ensure that the child's educational, medical, and emotional needs are being met.

To excel in this position, you should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a deep understanding of the challenges faced by both children with SEND and parents with mental health concerns. Sensitivity, empathy, and cultural awareness are essential, as you will be working with families from diverse backgrounds

Overall, as a parent support worker in a diverse community working with children with SEND and parents with mental health, you will be making a significant impact on the lives of families by providing them with the support, guidance, and resources they need to thrive.

**Responsibilities**:

- Organize and facilitate coffee mornings, workshops, and support groups for parents. These sessions can cover a range of topics, including parenting strategies, understanding SEND, mental health awareness, and self-care techniques.
- Provide one-on-one support to parents, offering a listening ear, emotional support, and guidance tailored to their specific needs and challenges.
- Assist parents in navigating the education system, helping them understand their rights and advocating for their child's needs within schools and other educational settings.
- Collaborate with other professionals, such as teachers, therapists, and healthcare providers, to ensure coordinated support and services for children with SEND and their families.
- Help parents access relevant resources and services in the community, such as support groups, counseling services, and financial assistance programs.
- Support parents in developing strategies and techniques to manage their own mental health, offering coping mechanisms and referrals to appropriate mental health services.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of interactions with parents, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.
- Stay up to date with current research, best practices, and policies related to SEND and mental health, attending relevant training and professional development opportunities.
- Attend training events and undertake other professional development.
- Be fully aware of and understand the duties and responsibilities arising from your role in the organisation regarding Child Protection procedures and the Safeguarding policies of the organisation to keep young people safe and protected from harm.
- To ensure that your line manager is made aware and kept fully informed of any concerns which you may have in relation to safeguarding and/or child protection
- Complete the relevant training and development to fulfil statutory and NHCFC requirements (e.g., first aid, safeguarding etc) and be open to ongoing continued professional development.
