Clinical Fellow in Paediatrics

Truro, United Kingdom Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust Full time

We are looking to recruit two clinical fellows to work in our paediatric team at the tier one level. This is great opportunity to gain invaluable acute paediatric experience within a welcoming, supportive, and dynamic team.

You will be well supported by registrars, our brilliant paediatric nursing team, our advanced nurse practitioners as well as the consultant team working across our children’s unit.

This includes the Paediatric Assessment Unit, inpatient wards, Paediatric High Dependency Unit and providing support to the Paediatric Emergency Response Team and our children’s emergency department.

You will learn/have ample opportunity to improve your clinical assessment and management of unwell children in a busy district general hospital in an amazing part of the country.

Even if a permanent career in Paediatrics is not currently your goal you will gain valuable experience in paediatric presentations (25% of all primary care presentations ED/GP). Through working within such a close team in various settings you will also take away incredibly transferable clinical, practical, and interpersonal skills.

Over the past few years, the clinical fellows have provided overwhelmingly good feedback on their experience at our unit, and many have chosen a career in Paediatrics as a result. We are keen to support your career with 20% of your time flexibly used to develop nonclinical skills if you wish, such as QI, education or research within the department.

Clinical work is at the level of a ST1 or ST2 depending on experience and your clinical responsibilities will be commensurate with this level of experience. Depending upon specialty you will also participate in an out of hour’s rota that will be remunerated appropriately in line with the 2016 Junior Doctors Contract. Routine work will include:

- Assessment and management of in-patients.
- Assessment and management of acute admissions.
- Attend ward rounds as timetabled.
- Attend multi-disciplinary ward meetings.
- Attend out-patients (where appropriate) and assist with in-patient management.
- Assessment of patients in the Emergency Department.
- Fulfil the duties of the weekly timetable including out of hours responsibilities.
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of clinical services.
- To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the patients within RCHT.
- To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.
- To attend meetings as appropriate.
- Sustainability is integral to the Trust achieving the NHS Net Zero target. All staff are therefore actively encouraged and supported to implement new ways of working within their field of expertise.
