**Purpose**

This is a new senior leadership role in NERC responsible for the scientific leadership of NERC’s capital investments in research infrastructure and facilities and developing and delivering NERC’s approach to place-based investments.

NERC spends over £390M a year on world-leading research and innovation, to invest in talent and skills, to enhance infrastructure, technologies, and equipment, and to deliver National Capability for UK environmental science.

NERC funds the UK’s environmental science national capability - the large research infrastructure, services, facilities and data centres that enable research and make its results available. This includes research stations around the globe, a fleet of ships and aircraft, geological observatories, and satellite technology to monitor environmental change on a global scale. A key part of this role will be to lead NERC’s approach to developing and prioritising the next generation of research infrastructure and capital investments for environmental science. This will include contributing and meeting the aspirations set out in the NERC Strategic Delivery Plan, the UKRI infrastructure road map and the UKRI Environmental Sustainability Strategy.

This role will provide scientific leadership of NERC’s research capital investments for our existing infrastructures as well as identifying new priorities for research capital investments at NERC’s six environmental Research Centres, universities and other research organisations.

NERC’s research capital and infrastructure investments promote place-based research, delivering impact for all parts of the UK. The role will lead NERC’s approach to place-based investments, working closely with partners in our Centres, other institutions, the Devolved Administrations and across UKRI, representing NERC and ensuring we build on and demonstrate the national, regional and local impacts of our place-based investments.

This is an outward facing role, a key part of which is the development of long-term relationships with our partners and other key stakeholders across the environmental science community with which we work closely to develop investments for new infrastructures and capital programmes.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to steer the nature of environmental science in the UK for years to come.

The role reports to the NERC Director of Strategic Partnerships and will have a high level of interaction with NERC’s senior leaders and stakeholders including NERC’s Executive Chair and Directors, NERC’s Research Centre Directors, NERC Council, as well as senior stakeholders across UKRI and its Councils and Institutes, and the external community including across Government. The role will engage widely with strategy, policy and operational colleagues to inform the investment decisions and approach.

**Responsibilities**
- Developing NERC’s strategic approach to new research infrastructure, capital and place-based investments that have the potential to transform environmental research
- Representing NERC’s interests in senior UKRI infrastructure and lace-based groups.
- Leading the development of proposals and scientific business cases for infrastructures and capital investments, specifically leading on the science case
- Engaging with stakeholders across the research community, UKRI and Councils, NERC Research Centres, government departments and the funding community, to understand priorities for infrastructure and capital investments, taking a long-term and strategic view and building effective long-term strategic partnerships
- Providing science assurance for the delivery of new infrastructures through contributing scientific input to programmes and ensuring the contribution of the environmental science community and other partners
- Assessing the scientific, strategic and financial impacts and implications capital, infrastructure and place-based investments
- Developing NERC’s approach to place-based investments and ensuring the impact of such investments is demonstrated, and leading for NERC across UKRI place-based initiatives
- Presenting options and recommendations to NERC’s Council and engaging with NERC’s Science Committee and Management Board as appropriate
