Speech and Language Therapy Assistant

The Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Service aims to maximise the potential of children to communicate in the environments and languages in which they need to function, including related impairments of eating and drinking.
The role requires experience of working with children and their families. Well-developed IT skills are essential. The post holder needs excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively and competently with children, their families and other professionals.
To provide agreed SLT support to children and their families who have been referred to the Paediatric SLT Service. This post will have a key focus on supporting children with complex needs, including implementing electronic assistive technology systems. Support may be for individuals or within groups and is under the direction of a qualified Speech and Language Therapist. Individual packages of care may be delivered without supervision in homes / other community settings.
The role of a Speech and Language Therapy assistant is very varied. The duties include:
- Being part of the SLT team providing support to children with speech, language and communication difficulties. This will include both verbal and non-verbal children with complex needs. Due to Covid-19 we have explored innovative ways to support families, including using 'telehealth' video calls for families and schools
- Assisting in assessment and the delivery of appropriate packages of care in a variety of settings including group training for families and other professionals.
- To prepare equipment and produce resources as requested by the SLT, to agreed departmental standards and sensitive to all issues of diversity
- To carry out other administrative duties related to clinical work, such as photocopying, collating materials, data entry and sending out letters

You will join our well established assistant team, supported by Speech and Language Therapists from the Complex Needs specialist team. The role includes both working with children and families and non clinical duties as detailed below:
Clinical Practice
- To assist in assessment and the delivery of appropriate packages of care in a variety of settings. This will include support for children with complex needs who may need to use electronic assistive technology systems to support their communication.
- To independently book and carry out agreed packages of care to children / families referred to the Paediatric SLT service, as directed by a qualified speech and language therapist. This role will mainly focus on supporting children with complex needs and electronic assistive technology.
- To observe children in a range of settings and report observations to the Speech and Language Therapist
- Contribute to the planning of group and individual therapy programmes.
- To order supplies for own use.
- To cost and order SLT department equipment as required with the team leader. Monitoring stock levels and ordering appropriately using own initiative.
- To work collaboratively as part of multi-disciplinary teams ensuring a well-coordinated care planCommunication resources / equipment

- To carry out other administrative duties related to clinical work, such as photocopying, collating materials, data entry and sending out letters
- To be responsible for communication equipment i.e. maintenance, including arranging repairs, booking out system and cleaning.

- To work within defined departmental protocols/policies/ procedures and professional code of conduct
- To maintain clinical and administrative records in accordance to team and Trust standards.
Education and development
- To provide support and advice to families within the remit of the package of care being delivered
- To implement planned induction of new SLT assistants
- To support the qualified Speech and Language Therapist in the delivery of staff training
