Research Associate in Health Economics

This role will cover two separate projects. In the first instance, you will join a team of researchers to further develop an existing decision-analytic model to build a ‘liver pathway model’ [called MANC-RISK-LIVER model]. The MANC-RISK-LIVER model will represent the pathways relevant to NHS England simulating the life-time impact of liver disease. It will simulate the stages of liver disease starting from asymptomatic [or symptomatic] presentation in general practice. The subsequent pathway of care will be represented using a mathematical model to capture: referral to secondary care for diagnosis; key stages in liver disease; treatment options; surveillance strategies. The MANC-RISK-LIVER model will build on the one developed for ID-LIVER that focused on alcohol use and poor dietary causes but expand it to include other causes of liver disease. The MANC-RISK-LIVER model will be conceptualised to allow sub-group analysis for specified characteristics of individuals within the population. It will enable the evaluation of the potential effect (healthcare costs and patient health) of interventions directed at different decision points alongside the diagnosis-treatment-surveillance liver pathway.
For example:
- Impact of changing the degree of liver damage at which people should be referred to secondary care (Fibroscan score) and associated interactions with the aetiology of liver disease
- Impact of changes in primary care referral from, for example, enabling GPs to use a risk-prediction algorithm in primary care
The second project will focus on assessing the cost effectiveness of MyWay Diabetes, a digital support platform for people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Working with colleagues in the centre for biostatistics, we will use causal inference methods, analysing routinely collected data to estimate the short-term effectiveness and resource impact of rolling out the intervention across multiple sites in England. We will then use decision-modelling to extrapolate the extent to which short-term measures collected in the study (for example, changes in bloodsugar and weight) can be expected to influence long-term outcomes (for example, heart attacks and kidney failure), so that we can estimate the expected lifetime costs and effects of care with and without the intervention. The project represents an exciting opportunity to participate in cutting-edge analysis of routine data and gain or extend experience of the complex decision-models that are used in the evaluation of diabetes interventions.
