Team Overview
- The Public Policy team sits at the centre of Ofcom. We lead on Ofcom’s engagement with Parliament and Government across our full remit. Collaborating internally across all policy teams and functions, we ensure the incorporation of wider public policy considerations into Ofcom’s work. Our responsibilities include coordinating Ofcom's engagement with Government, Parliament, and Ofcom’s work through the Digital Regulation Cooperation Forum.

The team’s role is to support the Board, senior management and the wider organisation to ensure Ofcom fully understands and participates in public debates about how best to make communications work for consumers. The work of the team is fast paced, collaborative and blends both internal and external stakeholder engagement.

Purpose of the Role
- You will help shape and implement the UK's approach to online safety, in line with Ofcom’s responsibilities set out under the Online Safety Act. Your primary focus will be helping Ofcom engage and work collaboratively with Government and Parliament, ensuring effective communication and understanding of Ofcom's regulatory stance and products in online safety.

The Online Safety Act was passed in October, bringing Ofcom new powers to protect UK citizens from harm online. We have also recently published our first major consultations on how to protect users from illegal content and protecting children from online pornography.

Key responsibilities

You will help manage Ofcom's online safety relationships with key stakeholders in Government and Parliament. Additionally, you will help adapt Ofcom's strategies in response to changes in external trends and any future developments in Government policy or legislation that affects Ofcom's online safety responsibilities.
- As an election approaches, you will also help Ofcom navigate the changing political landscape, ensuring that our strategies remain effective, and communicating Ofcom’s role as the new Online Safety regulator in the UK to Government and Parliament. Your contributions will guide Ofcom in influencing policy debates and decisions, ensuring that the organization's contributions are effectively integrated into broader public policy narrative around online safety.

Government and Parliamentary Engagement:
- Engage directly and confidently with officials in Government and Parliamentarians, establishing yourself as a key point of contact for UK Government departments on work relating to online safety.-
- Coordinate UK Government and Parliamentary engagement across online safety with Public Policy colleagues and other Ofcom teams, including those in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.Communication and Briefing:
- Produce accurate and clear written materials and briefings in plain English.-
- Manage correspondence with MPs, ensuring consistently high standards.Parliamentary Monitoring- Monitor Parliamentary business to identify opportunities for engagement with MPs and Peers.-
- Effectively manage Ofcom’s relationship with Parliament by recording and reporting on engagement activities.Policy Advisory and Strategy:
- Contribute to Ofcom’s policy-making process by providing advice on external policy and political context for our work in online safety.-
- Regularly monitor developments, scanning ahead to identify opportunities and inform policy direction.Flexibility and Cross-Functional Support:
- Provide cross-functional support and work across Ofcom’s online safety policy teams.-
- Support public policy Digital Regulation and Devolved Nations branches as needed.Skills, Knowledge and experience- A keen interest in and understanding of political processes and policy-making, a bonus if they relate to online safety and digital regulation.- The ability to analyse and interpret complex policy issues, discerning key points and implications for Ofcom's work.- An ability to juggle a diverse workload and respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment- Written and oral communication skills, including the ability to get complex information across clearly and concisely, presenting to a range of audiences- Experience in building and maintaining collaborative relationships with a range of stakeholders, including senior colleagues, and external organisations.- Have strong attention to detail and accuracy and in making sure your work is of the appropriate quality.- Able to work independently, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability and supporting a culture of collaboration and trust.
