**Main purpose of the post**
To achieve a **Level 3** **City & Guilds** (**Construction) - Civil Operations - (Groundworks) **Qualification through hands on work experience within the Authority’s Highways and Drainage Services section and by attending a nominated technical college course on a one-day per week basis.
**Main duties and responsibilities**
- Develop academic and practical skills by regularly attending approved technical training establishments as stipulated in the apprenticeship contract, and undertaking other skills training.
- Assisting with the erection, cleaning, fixing and dismantling of non-electrical street furniture and signs.
- Planting, turfing, soiling and seeding.
- Operation of powered plant and equipment once qualified.
- General labouring work in relation to highway maintenance and construction.
- Working in trenches and other open excavations including drainage and ducting work.
- Understanding and assisting the placing and removal of signs and barriers for the safety of the workforce and general public.
- Debris and litter removal as required.
- Advising supervisors of progress when required.
- Completing and understanding the skilled areas of work under supervision as part of training and development.
- Ensuring the quality of all work completed is to the required standard.
- Ensuring that material usage is kept to a minimum consistent with the required quality and assist in keeping plant and equipment in good order.
- Ensuring that all possible care is taken to minimise the risk of damage to underground cables and plant when competent.
- The timely completion of all necessary paperwork.
- Ensuring Health & Safety at Work policies are strictly adhered to.
**Welsh language**:Welsh language skills are not required
**DBS requirement**:There is no requirement for a DBS check for this post.
