Lead Biological Specimen Coordinator

We are looking for an enthusiastic Lead Biological Specimen coordinator to join our supportive and dedicated Head and Neck Research team, cross site.
The Head and Neck Unit at The Royal Marsden is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and is one of the largest research teams within the trust. It is recognised worldwide for its strength in diagnosing and treating cancers of the head and neck. The Royal Marsden has now also become the world’s first International Centre for Recurrent Head & Neck Cancer (IReC). IReC has an ambitious aim to create a centre of excellence and set international standards in the curative treatment, palliation, and supportive care of recurrent head and neck cancers.
The role of Biological Specimen Coordinator is pivotal, and the successful applicant will be part of a multidisciplinary team, liaising with a variety of personnel throughout the Royal Marsden, Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and our commercial trial sponsors. They will be responsible for the efficient delivery and oversight of biological specimen management for exciting research studies within the unit. Moreover, they will be responsible for the line management and development of the biological specimen team and support the Lead Research Nurse by offering input on the feasibility and set up of protocols from a lab perspective.
- The post holder will lead the biological specimen team within head, neck and thyroid research at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and our academic partner, the Institute of Cancer Research, at both Chelsea and Sutton sites.
- The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the seamless delivery of biological specimen management, with oversight and management of Senior Biological Specimen Coordinators and Biological Specimen Coordinators.
- The post holder will facilitate the collection and processing of blood and tissue samples for multiple trials within the head, neck and thyroid unit. They will be expected to accurately record and track each patient sample in compliance with all current regulations and SOPs.
- They will be responsible for the development of guidelines and standard operating procedures within the head, neck and thyroid unit, as well as other relevant documentation to facilitate the most efficient processes within the unit.
- They will have oversight of the induction, training and development of new and/or existing members of the biological specimen coordination team.

- The post holder will have management and oversight of the collection of archival and new tissue samples, processing and labelling samples, and managing the collection and storage of samples in the appropriate conditions (fridges/freezers/liquid nitrogen).
- To ensure that all work upholds laboratory Manuals, protocols, Standard Operational Procedures and Departmental and National Policies (The Human Tissue Act).
- To ensure that all tissue and data collection within the unit, adheres to current ethical guidelines for tissue collection adopted by the RMHNHST.
- The post holder will ensure that the integrity of a sample in their care is maintained, and the sample transported to an appropriate storage facility in a timely manner.
