Clinical Fellow in Medical Retina

The postholder will work with the current Medical retina and Diabetic eye consultants at WEH and CXH in the ophthalmology directorate of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
Imperial College Medical Retina and diabetic Service
The Medical Retina department at the Western Eye Hospital is a very busy and dynamic tertiary referral centre which also cares for acute emergencies from the ophthalmology dedicated casualty service. The service has been rapidly expanding. There are several consultant led Medical Retina and diabetic clinics running each week with additional glaucoma monitoring clinics running at the Charing Cross Hospital as well as specialist nurse practitioner led and technician led clinics managing approximately 200 patients a week.
Surgical retina and uveitis service
The sub-specialty retinal service covers most if not all pathology related to the retina and vitreous. There are dedicated retinal clinics as well as specific uveitis clinics and vitreoretinal clinics. The surgical vitreoretinal service is the tertiary referral centre for retinal detachments and other retinal conditions requiring surgery for the whole of west London.
Diabetic retinopathy service
As part of the medical retina service, the diagnosis, management and treatment of diabetic retinopathy is also carried out at Charing Cross and Western Eye hospitals.

Main
**Responsibilities**:
1. Provide High Quality Care to Patients in Ophthalmology
- The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration.
- To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
- To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
1. Research, Teaching and Training
- To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director/Chief of Service.
- Attend and participate in the West London weekly post-graduate ophthalmic teaching by organizing and chairing an allocated session 2-3 times a year.
- To attend weekly medical retina informal teaching every Wednesday 12:30-13:15pm
- To attend weekly medical retina big room meeting every Thursday 12:30-13:15pm
1. Performance Management
- To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:
- to ensure NICE guideline for Anti-VGF injection is strictly adhered to
- to participate in auditing clinical service
- to vet fast track referrals to ensure that patients with wet-AMD are seen promptly
1. Medical Staff Management
- To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.
1. Governance
- To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director/Chief of Service.
- Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
- To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.
- To keep fully informed about best practice in the specialty areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director/ Chief of Service.
- To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team.
1. Leadership and Team Working
- To demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national initiatives
- To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Imperial College as required.
- Adhere to Trust/departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.
Job Plan
- Out-patient care of Uveitis and Medical Retina patients including AMD, Diabetic Retinopathy and other medical retina disorders
- To be involved in Anti-VEGF treatment of Wet AMD and other conditions
- To be involved in Photodynamic therapy and retinal laser therapy
- To undertake A&E sessions at the Western Eye Hospital
- To maintain good communication with GP, optometrists, hospital clinicians and other allied professionals
