The main purpose of this role is to be the University’s lead strategic Environmental
Sustainability advisor having specific responsibility for the professional/ expert
leadership and management of:

- the development, review and implementation of the University’s

Environmental and Carbon Reduction Plans with the target of becoming
Net Zero carbon by 2050.
- the University’s energy procurement and management strategy
- the Universities Environmental Sustainability capital programme and

capital and revenue budgets
- the Environmental Sustainability team

The role will also be an active member of Estates and Facilities Senior Management
Team assisting the Director and Deputy Director in the overall leadership and
management of the Service and the Estates Plan.

**and Accountabilities**:
Responsibility for developing, reviewing and overseeing the delivery of strategic
plans including Environmental Sustainability and Carbon Reduction Plans, to reduce
the University's Scope 1, 2 & 3 carbon emissions and other environmental impacts,
using an evidence based, scientific approach to ensure achievement of long-term
net-zero targets and underlying objectives such as heat decarbonization

Development of supporting plans and operational policies related to minimising all
environmental impacts, such as those relating to energy and water use, biodiversity,
waste management, staff and student travel and procurement/supply chains.

Planning, management and reporting on the overall Environmental Sustainability
capital investment programme to ensure achievement of cost, performance and
time based objectives

Management of low/high value and/or technically complex low carbon and other
environmentally sustainable projects from inception to post completion evaluation
with appropriate input from stakeholders and colleagues from other disciplines/
services

Contribution to the planning/ development of estates maintenance and capital
investment projects to ensure energy efficient principles/effective energy/ carbon
reduction measures/ technology are embedded.

To collaborate on the development of mechanical, electrical and other standard
specifications to ensure sustainability, energy and carbon implications are
incorporated as requirements.

Identification of suitable sources of energy and carbon related external grant
input as required.

Responsibility for managing energy revenue and capital budgets in conjunction
with colleagues in the Finance Team, including forecasting, accurate allocation and
highlighting areas of financial risk (i.e., energy market volatility)

To represent the University at external meetings and events related to
environmental sustainability and to collaborate with external partners, sector
organisations and industry bodies in order to support a partnership approach to
tackling climate change, enhancing the University's profile and to share best
- practice

Development of effective internal and external communications and engagement
strategies ensuring activities and initiatives are tailored to appropriate
stakeholders/audiences, with a particular focus on behavioral change and
enhancing staff/ student engagement and collaboration

Development of suitable training materials and delivery of appropriate
environmental sustainability related training to internal colleagues

To act as the primary advisor to internal colleagues on environmental sustainability/
carbon related legislation and technical aspects of carbon adaptation and mitigation
in order to minimise costs, carbon emissions and risk to the University

Procurement and contract management of energy and utility supply contracts,
meter services and relevant frameworks to ensure they remain suitable and
continue to provide appropriate service levels, value for money, to ensure they
meet the requirements of the University and support relevant objectives.
Recommend and implement alternative courses of action where needed

Implement detailed energy audits and surveys as appropriate in order to proactively
identify energy savings opportunities and understand how buildings are used by
occupants and that environmental controls are operating as expected

To be the lead officer of the University Strategic Environmental Sustainability Group
including co-ordination of and reporting progress against the Environmental Plan
and associated plans/ objectives and to ensure wider sustainability objectives and
commitments are supported.

Recommend and implement continuous improvement of innovative energy and
environmental management processes to relevant standards and/or external
accreditation as required by the University e.g., introduction of Energy Management
Systems ISO50001

Support the Director in the development of the Estates and Facilities Service Plan,
identifying service priorities and proactively contributing to the University’s annual
planning round.
