This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic person who would love to pursue a career within this profession. Each day will bring new challenges and varied opportunities to develop your skills and a career at the heart of government.

You will play a key role in responding to breaking news stories and challenging misreporting, as well as generating proactive media announcements.

Please click here to book on.

**Job description**:
As Media Relations Officer, you will work closely with the Media Relations team to create and deliver robust reactive responses to regional and national press to support DVLA’s strategic goals.

You will also work on proactive media handling and will deal with journalists on a daily basis, including issuing timely rebuttals and good news stories.

This role sits within our External Communications department as part of our Media Relations team, who adopt a campaign-based approach, underpinned by the GCS principles, to everything we do. We believe the most effective communications are simple, evidence-based communications that reach the right people at the right time with the right message.

By providing timely, accurate and confident media handling to journalists and supporting DVLA communications campaigns, you will play an important part in shaping the future narrative of DVLA, from our ambitious digital transformation programme to keeping vehicle tax evasion low.

Please note that this role actively participates in an out of hours press office service. This is a mandatory part of the role and is anticipated that you will be required to cover this for 1 week and 1 weekend in every 4.

**Responsibilities**

Your duties will include:

- Ensuring a prompt response to all media enquiries - and ensuring all responses have been through the appropriate approvals processes.
- Building and driving relationships across the Agency and beyond to help build communications plans and stay on top of what’s happening across the business.
- Engaging in proactive communications with the media, identifying and developing innovative ideas to support the Agency’s business objectives and being responsive to tight deadlines.
- Editing and tailoring messages as appropriate to ensure corporate standards are applied and that the information meets the needs of the audience.

For further information about the role and responsibilities please refer to the role profile attached.

**Additional information**

Therefore, the expectation is that you will spend a minimum of 40% of your working time based at your principal workplace (DVLA). We would encourage you to discuss the working arrangements for this role with us during the recruitment process.

**Person specification**:
We are looking for someone who has a passion for communications and the drive to succeed in this role. You will have excellent verbal and written communications skills and able to work under pressure. You’ll have an interest in the news and some experience in working with communication channels such as social media. You will be a motivated and positive individual with a keen willingness to learn and a great team player.

You will enjoy working at pace, meeting tight external deadlines and prioritising your work in line with business objectives. You will be resilient and able to recover quickly and learn from setbacks. You will be part of a forward-thinking team and able to build relationships quickly to get the job done in a fast paced environment.

You will be confident and comfortable adapting your style for a wide range of internal and external audiences.

You will need to use your initiative to come up with ideas and adapt to rapidly developing situations that require prompt and accurate responses.

You will be a natural networker, building strong relationships and you will be somebody who sees the bigger picture and will be able to take pride in and understand how your own professional contribution feeds into wider organisational priorities.

**_ We strive to ensure that DVLA is a great place
