Edinburgh, United Kingdom Scottish Water Full time

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

Do you care about the quality of Scotland’s water? Would you like to join our laboratory team to help make a difference with a training programme included?

At Scottish Water, we do a huge amount of work behind the scenes to ensure that Scotland has a constant and fresh supply of safe, high-quality water. Laboratory sampling and analysis plays a critical role to both public health and to our environment.

A team of about 320 samplers, scientists and support staff provide an extensive analytical testing service. Over the course of a year, the labs carry out test at a rate of one per minute - both for Scottish Water and for other customers.

We’re looking for a conscientious Scientific Sampling Administrator who loves hands-on, mix of physical and admin work to join the Technical Support Team in Edinburgh where we provide excellent customer service to our in-house laboratory teams as well as to a wide range of internal and external customers. This role is an ideal entry level role for people looking to start their Scottish Water career.

What you’ll be doing:
You’ll be following our processes to register and receive a high volume of water and wastewater samples from all over Scotland, for a mix of internal and external customers as well as regulatory compliance samples. You’ll do this in line with the strict turnaround times for our laboratory colleagues and you will also ensure all sampling data is entered correctly to allow technical interpretation of laboratory results by others.

You’ll make sure that your work meets the requirements of the Scientific Services management system, ISO17025 and Drinking Water Testing Specification (DWTS) standards. For your own safety, and the safety of your colleagues and our customers, you will follow Scottish Water’s Health and Safety policies consistently and ensure compliance with all relevant legislative, regulatory and SW policy requirements.

In order to keep a high volume of work flowing, you will investigate and resolve regular customer queries. You will also investigate any issues that occur and undertake root cause analysis and contribute towards our continuous improvement system. You’ll help schedule and prioritise work within your team environment and carry out routine maintenance and calibration of equipment.

You’ll also be responsible for sending samples to external laboratories for analysis where required, and ensuring the results received are entered efficiently as well as accurately to ensure customers get the results they require within set timescales. Lastly, like all our employees, you’ll pride yourself on being able to provide excellent levels of customer service and advice to internal and external customers.

What you’ll need:
When you join us, you’ll be part of Scientific Services development programme which lasts 2 years, and where you can perfect your customer service and administrative skills. But you’ll need some foundational knowledge to get you off to a flying start:
- You’ll need to demonstrate excellent customer service skills-
- You’ll need to demonstrate basic IT skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, Word, Excel)- Skills that are desirable but not essential are:
- Some experience working in an ISO 17025 and DWTS accredited laboratory, or a good understanding of what the standard requires- Some experience working in a UKAS accredited laboratory-based environment- Some experience of LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) software- A commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace for you and your colleagues- Good teamwork is essential, so the ability to work as part of a team to achieve goals is key

What you’ll get:
The starting salary for this role is £21,053.00 (part time pro rata). A SSA Progression Plan applies which reaches £25,468.00 (part time pro rata) over a 2-year period. Progression is 6 monthly and tied to completion of specific training milestones in your development plan.
