**About the Service/Department**
Dame Gertrude Young House (DGYH) is an accommodation-based service comprising of 23 units for men who have severe and enduring mental health needs, and who are also owed a homelessness duty by the local authority. With an emphasis on supporting the transition for service users, the service has a strong focus on empowering people on their journey towards independence and recovery. The service enables people to develop the life skills required to maintain their independence in the community thus preventing the otherwise unnecessary use of more institutional forms of care and hospital admissions and move on to less supported ‘step down’ accommodation, before eventually moving on to live independently in the community. The service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, 7 days a week by onsite recovery workers and double sleep-in cover. Full housing management and supported facilities are provided.

**About the role**
Empower a caseload of service users to manage their health and wellbeing, maintain their independence, identify their strengths and achieve their goals and aspirations, under the direction of the Team Manage

Some other main responsibilities of the role include:

- To clearly articulate the aims and objectives, pathway and service model to people using the service so they can fully participate in and co-produce their support.
- Empower service users to engage effectively in their liaisons with professionals within the community such as community mental health teams, social work teams, housing providers, health professionals, Job Centre Plus etc.
- Develop co-produced group activities, peer support networks and other community-based approaches to empowering service users to achieve their goals and aspirations and to encourage service users to access these opportunities.

**About you**
- Experience of working with people who have people who have experienced mental health and / or dual diagnosis issues in a paid or voluntary role.
- The ability to learn quickly, gather information and make defensible decisions.
- The ability to receive, process and accurately record detailed information, sharing it with others, as appropriate and within the framework of confidentiality.
- The ability to work with people who may display challenging behaviour and to defuse potentially difficult situations.
- Having a solution focused approach and the capacity to work constructively and collaboratively towards problem solving.
- Being optimistic about the possibility of change and the clients’ capacity to change.
- A calm, non-judgemental and anti-discriminatory approach.
- The ability to work within a structured, busy and sometimes pressured environment.
- Willingness to work unsociable hours. Early, late, overnight and weekend duties as part of a team rota required.
- Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and ability to address them appropriately.
