Deputy Head of Midwifery

The DHoM will also work in collaboration with the Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatal (OGN) Directorate to provide senior leadership and ensure the delivery and achievement of objectives and contribute to the strategic policies for midwifery and nursing services.
The post holder will provide clinical and operational leadership to achieve the maternity service’s aims and objectives of delivering high quality, safe and compassionate care that meets the needs of women, birthing people, and their families.
The Deputy Head of Midwifery, Workforce and Operations, will provide professional leadership to the Jessop Wing operational matron team ensuring effective systems and processes are in place to manage maternity and neonatal services safely and efficiently. Influence and participate in the journey to compliance with all Ockenden Immediate and Essential Actions, NHS Resolution Maternity Incentive Scheme and all other relevant national and local strategic recommendations.
The post holder will provide professional leadership and be a role model for OGN including the wider members of the team promoting the high quality standards in the learning environment with the aim of providing safe, compassionate, and effective care, actively promoting best practice and implementing innovation by inspiring others through example. This role will be instrumental in professionally challenging traditional practice and encouraging innovative problem solving.
The DHoM will contribute to the development of the maternity strategy in collaboration with the wider team and the Maternity Voice Partnership, service user group and lead on the operational implementation of the maternity strategic vision both at the Trust and within the wider LMNS. The Deputy Head of Midwifery will deputise for the Head of Midwifery where required.
The post holder will participate in the OGN senior leadership out of hours on call rota.
The Directorate of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology is based at the Jessop Wing which is linked to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The maternity unit has over 6500 births per year and is a Regional Tertiary Maternity Service with a Level 3 Neonatal Unit of 44 cots. A tertiary Gynae-Oncology service and Gynaecology Service, which includes an Assisted Conception Unit, complete the services within the Directorate.

Reporting to and in partnership with the Head of Midwifery the post holder will ensure the effective implementation of a comprehensive and systematic approach to midwifery workforce developments reflecting Birthrate Plus methodology.
Support the Director of Midwifery/ Head of Midwifery in ensuring that all aspects of clinical risks relating to workforce are robustly and effectively managed in to ensure the safety and quality of maternity Neonatal and Gynaecology services.
Promote a just culture in which incident reporting and learning from incidents is accepted as “business as usual” and recognised as a vehicle for quality improvement and the provision of safe services.
Promote psychological safety by ensuring lessons learned are shared systematically in the workplace and embedded into practice. Promote reflection and debriefs for the MDT following adverse or unexpected events.
Champion the continuous maternity service improvement cycle initiatives by developing programmes in partnership with the quality and safety teams and practice education team, including the Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA) teams.
Educate, support, and advise senior managers and clinicians responsible for carrying out investigations of incidents and near misses including identification and implementation of action plans and ensure measures are in place to prevent incident recurrence.
Support the Director of Midwifery and Head of Midwifery in the implementation of robust systems and arrangements to support staff to engage safety, and comply with National Policy and Best Practice.
Develop and promote a positive culture of quality and service improvement.
Cultivate established links with stakeholders, external agencies, and third sector parties to ensure their participation and contribution to the development, planning and evaluation of services within the OGN Directorate.
