**General Farm Worker**

The National Botanic Garden of Wales (NBGW) is a centre of expertise for biodiversity, conservation, education, research, and horticulture. NBGW has become an established national institution since opening in 2000, working with partners throughout Wales and internationally. It is a Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) accredited institution. Based in Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire, the 568-acre estate features a mixed landscape comprising of formal gardens, a National Nature Reserve (NNR) and certified organic farm, all within a Cadw Grade II* parkland. On-site facilities include classrooms, laboratories and the National Seed Bank of Wales.

The organic farm covers an area of 360 acres of NNR farmland which is grazed for amenity and conservation value as well as to deliver a commercial return. It currently has a small herd of pure Welsh Black cattle and a small flock of Balwen sheep which will be enhanced with summer grazing of mixed store cattle and store lambs. Diversifying income via charcoal production, logs, kindling, wild flower harvesting, rentals, courses and other food production is important. The farm NNR has key areas of biodiversity and wildlife interest with pathways open to the visitor.

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our Farm Manager on a part time basis. The role will be varied and include yard clearing, mucking out, bedding, feeding of stock, assisting with livestock health & reproduction, general farm maintenance, path maintenance, estate maintenance & machinery operation.

This position sits within the commercial team and contributes to delivering NBGW’s conservation values and financial sustainability goals as detailed in the 10-year strategic plan 2021-2031. The role requires the postholder to be active in the key strategic areas of:
Objective 1 - Be an internationally
- renowned centre for biodiversity conservation and research

Objective 4 - Be a successful visitor destination of international standing that contributes to the economic, social, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales

Objective 6 - Continue to build and secure a financially sustainable organisation to maximise delivery of the core mission activity of the Botanic Garden.

Note these key areas may change/evolve over time.

The role will entail weekend working every other weekend and providing cover for holidays. Additional hours may be available. Full training will be given where deemed appropriate.

**Main Duties and Responsbilities**

1 Assisting with the practical care of all farm livestock to high husbandry standards through daily inspections, taking appropriate action in response to needs and reporting matters as appropriate.

2 Assisting with routine tasks such as, cleaning, veterinary health such as drenching, injecting, foot trimming and animal reproduction (calving, lambing). Moving & loading/unloading livestock.

3 Carry out basic tractor operations including, winter housing duties, flail topping, rolling, chain harrowing etc. Moving and handling items and equipment.

4 Conducting routine repair and maintenance tasks across the farm NNR to include structures, fences, machinery and equipment. Keeping the site, buildings and areas in good order and high standard of cleanliness and tidiness.

5 Assist with woodland tasks including fencing, hedging, coppicing and tree planting. Assist with charcoal burning, biochar, log cutting and packaging. Weed control and scrub clearance though strimming & mowing, keep marked paths clear for visitors. Training will be available for machinery & equipment where required.

6 Assist with food production tasks as required including meat sales and dealing with customers and retail outlets.

7 Adhere to health and safety requirements and support the farm manager with departmental risk and COSHH assessments.

8 Undertake any other duties as reasonably required.

**Salary**: £11.44 per hour
