The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) is an executive agency of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), delivering over £2 billion in payments to farmers, traders and landowners each year.

With EU Exit and the move through Agricultural Transition, the Rural Payments Agency is using the opportunity to develop a new approach to farming and land management. The use of payments via agri-environment schemes to farmers and land managers for environmental benefits allows RPA to work with customers to drive the required outcomes in Defra’s 25-year strategic plan.

The Regulatory and Advice Service (RAS) within RPA is a team of 250 people including Field Officers, Inspection Support teams and Statistical and Analytical teams. Between them, these teams deliver over 6500 visits a year, ensuring the public money being paid to support environmental outcomes is used effectively, providing support for customers through advice and guidance and playing a key role in delivery of the environmental ambitions set out in Defra’s 25-year plan.

As a Field Officer, you will help us to create a better place for everyone to live by helping agricultural and rural communities to thrive and protect the environment for future generations. It is a physically demanding role as you could be walking several miles, across different terrains - whatever the weather, as well as working closely with cattle, sheep and pigs.

Our Field Officers have a varied and challenging role. You will be conducting visits to farmers’ premises to assess the validity and compliance of claims they have made to the various EU Legacy and domestic UK schemes available and provide advice and guidance to support farmers.

You will be undertaking a variety of tasks such as measuring land and checking landscape features and equipment, using GPS based technology.

You will be working closely with cattle, sheep and pigs checking ear tags to ensure births, deaths, movements and tagging requirements are met; whilst continuously managing, and assessing the risks this brings.

You may be required, as part of a multi-skilled team, to visit food premises or meat processing plants.

You will prepare for your visits in advance ensuring you have all the information you require and follow up with written reports detailing your findings and providing advice and guidance.
