Applications are invited for an experienced, suitably qualified individual with demonstrable laboratory experience in dealing with specimen handling/clerical skill to join a dynamic workforce in the Haemato-Oncology Diagnostic Service (HODS) at the Royal Liverpool Hospital site of Liverpool Clinical Laboratories. You will be given appropriate cross training to be able to perform basic tasks across all disciplines within HODS, and will be expected to demonstrate competency across all areas as required.

The service is well equipped with the latest clinical diagnostic technology, and processes around 6,000 samples per annum. The department is UKAS ISO 15189:2012 accredited. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join a very busy, rapidly developing department dedicated to providing the highest quality patient care.

The role will primarily involve preparing patient specimens for testing, clerical duties and operating laboratory equipment including their quality control and maintenance. They will also perform general laboratory duties both with and without the direct supervision of BMS staff. To support the delivery of services to several external Trusts, the post holder will also prepare materials for MDT, including receiving lists from external users, retrieval of materials from archive, transport of materials to off-site locations and receipt of returned materials.

Main duties will involve supporting BMS staff in ensuring the operational functionality of the laboratory areas, such as housekeeping and helping maintain complex analytical equipment. You will have experience of LIMS, other IT systems and you will have experience of Quality Management Systems.

You should be able to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills; you will be expected to support the Senior staff / Biomedical Scientists responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the laboratory. You should also be able to adapt to meet the demands of this rapidly evolving laboratory service and meet demands of our service users.

You will be expected to maintain the required professional standards. Working as part of the team you will contribute to the provision and further development of a high-quality diagnostic service.

Scientific and Technical

1. Receive specimens into the department ensuring correct patient identification and accessioning.
2. To participate in the routine work of the HODS laboratory in accordance with departmental protocols.
3. Assist the BMS staff in the specialised areas of the department when required;
- Prepare slides, Immunophenotyping/immunocytochemistry panels using both manual and automated techniques.
- Prepare instrumentation for sample/tissue processing/molecular genetics.
- Prepare and quality control analysers for Immunophenotyping, Immunocytochemistry, tissue processing and staining and molecular genetics.

1. File slides/samples/blocks in accordance with departmental policy.
2. Stain slides with the appropriate methodology both manual and automated.
3. Perform maintenance tasks in accordance with departmental SOPs, including equipment such as Flow cytometers, preparation equipment, sequencers, tissue processors and others.
4. Perform initial quality control checks.
5. Preparation of staining solutions and reagents.
6. Safe disposal of a range of hazardous and non-hazardous laboratory waste i.e., paper, chemicals, glass, human tissues.
7. Take delivery of consumables as required.
8. Safely store and monitor levels of consumables reporting low stocks to senior members of staff.
9. Undertake tasks required for UKAS accreditation e.g. reviewing SOPs, audits.

Weekend service

1. Take responsibility for the Haemato-Oncology service for this Trust and supply a support service to other hospitals / other organizations within the region.
2. Prioritize work to help ensure that patients receive the best possible care.

Health and Safety

1. Maintain proper health and safety standards at all times, following local and national protocols.
