To carry out phlebotomy (blood sample collection) and simple tests and procedures within the Haematology department and other areas of the community/Acute, to carry out domiciliary phlebotomy duties if required and directed to do so. To liaise with medical and non-medical staff as necessary.

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated Phlebotomist to work within our Community Phlebotomy Service; applicants must have previous phlebotomy venepuncture experience and be able to take blood samples using vacationer/ syringe and butterfly, from patients in their own homes and care homes throughout the Walsall borough.

You will be part of a team with responsibility for assisting the multidisciplinary team in nursing interventions for frail elderly patients in their own home or a clinical setting. You will need to be able to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service. You must demonstrate experience of multi-disciplinary/multi agency working and utilise strong links with partnership agencies at Social Services, the Acute Hospital and Community Locality Teams. Working 5 days across a 7 day service 08.30 hours to 16.30 hours on a shift rota basis. You will be expected to respond to Urgent blood requests through GP referrals and through the Care Navigation Centre Virtual Ward.

The successful applicant must demonstrate good communication skills, be able to work as part of a team and show sensitivity and empathy towards patients.

You must be willing to travel frequently within the working day throughout the borough

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 286,700, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development of our Pleck Road site was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities. Work is also well underway on its multi-million pound new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre which will house a new Emergency Department (including Children’s Emergency Department), co-located Paediatric Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Unit and Urgent Care Centre. This is scheduled for completion this year.

We provide high quality, friendly and effective community health services from some 60 sites including Health Centres and GP surgeries. Covering Walsall and beyond, our multidisciplinary services include rapid response in the community and home-based care, so that those with long-term conditions and the frail and elderly, can remain in their own homes to be cared for wherever appropriate.

1. To check and maintain stocks of materials and consumables in various
designated areas.
2. To carry out phlebotomy duties within the laboratory and other areas as
designated by the senior staff when necessary.
3. The postholder is required to liaise with hospital clinicians, other healthcare professionals and external agencies in line with departmental policies.
4. Provides and receives sensitive information from patients and their
representatives where a high degree of people skills are necessary. This may include dealing with distressed or aggressive patients.
