To provide comprehensive phlebotomy support to the Phlebotomy Lead, and their phlebotomy team members. The post-holder will support patient care across the Trust by carrying out phlebotomy duties as a prime role responsibility within the inpatient wards.

The role will require the post holder to be based in the phlebotomy outpatients, with the scope to provide an enhanced phlebotomy role/blood culture phlebotomy service across the Trust as demand dictates. To liaise with medical and non-medical staff as necessary.

The post-holder will undertake other phlebotomy-associated tasks as directed by the registered practitioner to effect timely investigations and treatments for adult patients. This is a developing role, and the nature and extent of other duties (indicated below) will be reviewed at regular intervals; the post-holder will be expected to assist in identifying and responding positively to the changing demands of the service.

The post-holder will carry a bleep and will work regularly without direct supervision, but with guidance from a registered practitioner, and will be expected to assign priority to their own workload in discussion with the registered practitioner. The post-holder will carry the on-call phone for phlebotomy and respond to sickness calls outside of the phlebotomy office working hours. The post holder may also be required to supervise and train less experienced staff as instructed by registered staff and Phlebotomy Lead.

Applications are invited for experienced Phlebotomists to join our busy Phlebotomy team based at Walsall Manor Hospital. The main duties will be to collect blood samples from patients on the hospital wards, outpatient departments and various sites in the community. Applicant must be reliable, flexible, a team player and be able to work effectively under pressure with excellent communication skills and a good command of the English language. A clean full driving licence is required.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the provision of a full seven day Phlebotomy Service. The routine working hours may vary depending upon the demands of the service. Core working hours will be Monday to Friday, 08:00 - 17:00, on a flexible basis to suit the needs of the service. Rotational weekend and bank holiday working will also be required.
- To check and maintain stocks of materials and consumables in various designated areas.
- To carry out phlebotomy duties within areas as designated by the senior staff.
- The postholder is required to liaise with hospital clinicians, other healthcare professionals and external agencies in line with departmental policies.
- Provides and receives sensitive information from patients and their representatives where a high degree of people skills are necessary. This may include dealing with distressed or aggressive patients.
- To correctly identify patients and to label blood samples taken from them appropriately.
- The postholder will exercise autonomy within professional and managerial boundaries and will be required to verify and validate specimen collection from phlebotomy ward collection sheets.
- Work with colleagues as a team member and as part of a team without direct supervision offering support if necessary to colleagues.
- Prioritise own duties and workload on a daily basis, working to deadlines.
- To bring to the attention of the Lead Phlebotomist of any problems that may arise.
