Head of Research

We are looking for an accomplished scientist to lead our research and nourish innovation across the company, encompassing a variety of research areas, including: genome biology and editing, RNA biology, synthetic biology, plant pathology, host-pathogen interactions, computational biology, and plant transformation.
**Job Purpose**
The Head of Research will work closely with other R&D managers and researchers, to answer applied biological questions in a timely manner. We’re looking for an interdisciplinary scientist with the ability to both 'see the big picture' and 'dive into the details', and a proven track record in designing and delivering high-quality research objectives. The role could fit well for the transition of an experienced academic to the industry.
Based primarily at our R&D site in Norwich and reporting to the CSO, the Head of Research will contribute to projects at all phases of the pipeline, from initial design to field trials. You should feel comfortable working in a fast paced, dynamic environment and be able to communicate complex scientific principles, methods, analyses and results to professionals from diverse backgrounds, including internal and external stakeholders.
**Responsibilities***
- Defining and planning scientific programs across teams to enable Tropic’s medium and long-term strategic goals.
- Accountable to CSO for signing off rigorous and realistic scientific plans.
- Monitor and provide scientific input to ongoing projects to ensure high quality and timely delivery of R&D objectives.
- Support innovation capture and IP filings.
- Establish research standardization across the R&D teams.
- Promote early-stage innovation proof-of-concepts.
- Support the business team in new trait/technology evaluations.
**Requirements**:
- A science leader with excellent communication skills, capable of influencing scientists and establishing networks with top-tier academics and senior professionals in other organizations.
- Broad and deep realistic thinker with extensive experience/knowledge across multiple research areas who understands the majority of Tropic’s capabilities.
- Innovative and critical mindset.
- Good facilitator of discussions.
- Significant personal contribution to measurable research & development outcomes, including peer-reviewed papers, patents, awarded grants, technology/product development etc.
