Do you have the skills to support patients in addressing their long-term health challenges including de-conditioning, and supporting individuals on their journey in returning to active living?

UHCW NHS Trust is part of a new national network supporting patients with severe intestinal failure and is one of two new specialist regional centres working across the West Midlands. We are looking to grow our existing dedicated multidisciplinary team to support this expansion, we are forward thinking and strive for excellence within this clinical field and are excited to include a Clinical Exercise Physiology role in our enhanced service.

There will be opportunities for training and development with other specialist centres through the network across the UK, and the potential for clinical and academic collaborations as the SIF Network expands.

This post offers the opportunity to be part of the design and development of this new service at UHCW NHS Trust, with the support of the Clinical Leads and wider network. There is an intention for the role to develop which may include outreaching into the community and across the hospital into other clinical specialities such as oncology.

The successful post holder will be part of the Therapy department surgical team working alongside Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Therapy Technicians. The Therapy department is eager to incorporate Clinical Exercise Physiologists within our inpatient teams. As such the post holder would be integral to service development, demonstrating the benefits of diversifying our rehabilitation offer within specialist pathways.

Professional supervision and support will be provided by the Exercise Physiology leads already established at UHCW NHS Trust.

The post-holder will promote the role exercise can have supporting patients with SIF, drawing on experiences and knowledge of exercise prescription in other clinical populations. They will support the delivery of personalised exercise training interventions, addressing maladaptation’s associated with the condition and extended periods of bed rest i.e. decline in cardio-respiratory fitness and functional mobility, altered body composition, increased risk of sarcopenia and poor quality of life.

The post holder will manage a caseload of patients with complex needs, using evidence-based practice, shared decision making and client-centred principles, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions in a defined clinical setting.

The post holder will participate in the planning, development and evaluation of clinical practice and service development in the defined clinical setting.

A skilled and knowledgeable practitioner in exercise science, with experience of clinical exercise prescription in a range of long-term conditions and morbidities including gastro/surgical conditions, cardiac, vascular and heart failure. You will provide support to the wider surgery therapy team, participating in service/policy development, involving patients and public.
