Manchester, United Kingdom Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Staff who work on inpatient mental health wards experience violence, verbal abuse and see patients harming themselves. They also hear about child abuse that patients have experienced in the past. Together, these experiences are known as ‘workplace trauma.’ The Workplace Trauma project is an NIHR programme development grant exploring the effect of workplace trauma on staff working on acute mental health wards. It is a collaboration betweenGreater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trustand the University of Manchester. The project’s Lead Investigator is Katherine Berry (Professor of Clinical Psychology).

The post holder will be based with the Complex Trauma and Resilience Research Unit in the Research and Development Department at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, which hosts a number of large mental health trials and other research studies. The post holder will also have close links with the University of Manchester, School of Health Sciences where the Lead Investigator is based. Both the Trust and the University place a very high value on collaborative working with service users and collaborate with service user groups locally and nationally to support a range of clinical and research initiatives.

The post holder will be expected to have proven and substantial experience in conducting qualitative research; for example, by having previously assisted in the running of a funded research study and/or a postgraduate (Masters or PhD) study.

We know that experiences of workplace trauma are more common for staff from Black, Asian, and other ethnic minority groups, and we will be purposively sampling 50% of our participants from a range of minority groups. Experience of recruiting research participants from diverse communities that are often under-represented in research would therefore be beneficial for the role.

The post-holder will work alongside Prof Katherine Berry and colleagues at the University of Manchester and Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust on a research project to explore the effects of workplace trauma on staff working within acute mental health wards. The project is part of a programme of research funded by the National Institute for Health Research. The post holder will work with other researchers to carry out interviews with staff members on acute mental health wards across the UK about their experiences of workplace trauma. The post holder will also be involved in qualitative data analysis and report writing. They will also be required to assist with other activities, such as engagement and consultation with stakeholders and dissemination of research findings.

Greater Manchester Mental Health (GMMH) Foundation Trust employs over 6,400 members of staff, who deliver services from more than 160 locations.

We provide inpatient and community-based mental health care for people living in Bolton, the city of Manchester, Salford, Trafford and the borough of Wigan, and a wide range of specialist mental health and substance misuse services across Greater Manchester, the north west of England and beyond.

Our people enjoy their work, have opportunities to learn and develop their skills and are encouraged to generate new ideas that improve care for our service users.

To assist with the smooth day-to-day running and completion of the research project by supporting the Chief Investigator and lead qualitative researcher.

To assist in the recruitment of staff participants, explain the study in detail, and obtain informed consent to participate.

To conduct sensitive semi-structured research interviews with staff as required to explore, elicit and analyse information regarding participants’ experiences of workplace trauma and their support needs.

To retrieve complex data from relevant datasets and analyse research outcomes to produce summary reports on research activity for a variety of purposes including updating the research team and trial steering and data management committees.

To be responsible for the safe keeping of data files.

To assist with the qualitative analysis using Nvivo software, and interpretation of the results of the research.

To assist in the write up of study findings, preparation of publications, conference and other Powerpoint presentations, and dissemination materials.
