Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine’s new Centre for Human Infection Challenge has several academic investigators working in the field of challenge studies to accelerate the development of interventions that will impact on global health. We have outstanding facilities fully dedicated to human challenge studies including an outpatient (18-bed) and inpatient (12-bed high containment rooms) as well as laboratory facilities including CL3. We have an ambitious plan for expansion of existing and new challenge models working in partnership with industry and our academic collaborations in the UK and worldwide working on human infection field.

We are looking for a Head of Operations who will lead the operations of the Accelerator Human Challenge Facility (AHCF). The postholder will manage a sustainable business model for the AHCF, monitoring budgets and workplans and implementing strategies for continuous quality improvement across a portfolio of Controlled Human Infection Model (CHIM) research.

This is a key leadership and strategic role, working closely with the AHCF Director, AHCF steering and management committees and senior staff to enable effective work links. You will be responsible for the overall promotion and management of the Centre and provide advice to Principal Investigators on the management support they will need to deliver clinical CHIM trials to high standards of quality, on time and within budget.

**Key responsibilities include**:
**Strategic duties**
- Leading and driving a sustainable strategy for AHCF as part of LSTM's overall strategic plan, including implementing the AHCF strategy and providing regular financial and academic progress reports to key stakeholders.
- Implementing robust governance structures for AHCF aligned with funders and LSTM, and keeping informed about changes in legislation and regulatory requirements that may impact AHCF’s work and strategy.

**Leadership and Management of AHCF**
- Providing leadership and management oversight for all aspects of AHCF, including financial and human resources, planning and delivering AHCF objectives, strategies, plans, budgets, and ensuring effective delegation and compliance with good governance principles.
- Strengthening coordination with stakeholders, ensuring effective management and delivery of CHIM trials, developing a culture of continuous improvement, and maintaining accountability for financial probity, risk management, and quality assurance.

**Financial management**
- Managing budgets, maintaining accounts, ensuring timely submission of timesheets and financial forecasts, monitoring financial reports, and developing relationships with LSTM’s finance, grants, and contracts teams to ensure effective management of AHCF’s portfolio of work.

**Business development**
- Building and maintaining a network of internal and external contacts for AHCF’s CHIM trials, identify and capitalise on strategic partnership opportunities, and engage with LSTM research groups to develop new work opportunities.
- Develop and implement business development strategies, represent AHCF externally, create a communication strategy with the External Relations Team, liaise with stakeholders to maximise funding opportunities, and manage relationships with key funding bodies.

**Regulatory compliance and quality assurance**
- Develop, maintain, and update AHCF Standard Operating Policies and Procedures, ensure timely staff training, adhere to GCP and Research Governance requirements, implement safety reporting procedures, comply with data protection regulations, and conduct audits on selected research.
- Maintain excellent relationships with LSTM’s Research Governance, Scientific Computing Units, and Global Health Trials Unit (GHTU), oversee documentation systems for all trials, implement safeguarding policies, manage risk registers, and ensure high scientific, ethical, and governance standards.
- Educated to Masters’ Degree Level or equivalent
- Evidence of professional CPD
- Project Management qualification or equivalent relevant experience
- Extensive experience of leading and managing senior staff, with the ability to engage and motivate staff to fulfil their potential
- Proven ability to develop financial strategies and manage financial processes in particular, the co-ordination of clinical trials including managing all types of trial on time and to budget
- Knowledge of all aspects of trial management including Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMPs) and Good Clinical Practice and Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
- Demonstrable specialist knowledge and experience of Research Governance Framework, the EU Clinical Trials Directive and clinical trial approval process
- Experience of implementing and monitoring strategic plans and governance structures
