Trained Clinical Coder/Trainee Clinical Coder

Base location - Venn House, Royal Sussex County Hospital

**Payscale**: Band 3/4 (depending upon previous training and experience)

A vacancy has arisen within the UHSussex Clinical Coding Department allowing an opportunity to join an experienced team of Clinical Coders, who extract diagnostic and procedural data from case notes and translate it into classification codes, using ICD10 and OPCS 4

Previous clinical coding experience is desirable. The National Clinical Coding Standards Course will be provided for trainees. A good understanding of anatomy and physiology would be desirable.

To train to provide high quality and timely coded clinical data. Clinical coders collect, collate, analyse and code clinical information relating to the diagnoses and procedures using ICD10 (International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems) and OPCS Classification of Interventions and Procedures. It is essential to ensure the data is accurate and complete to meet Trust deadlines supporting the allocation of HRG’s (Healthcare Resource Groups), Service Line reporting, Clinical Governance and to facilitate maximisation of the Trust income in line with Payment by Results (PbR).

1. To train to obtain and collate clinical information from patient health records. To analyse and interpret that data and translate into Diagnosis and Procedure codes using the International Classification of Diseases (latest version) and the Office of Population and Censuses Classifications of Surgical Operations and Procedures (latest version). These codes need to be accurate, complete and timely to support multiple Trust business streams and the post holder needs to understand the implications to the Trust of this coded data.

2. To undertake and pass the NHS Digital Clinical Coding Standards Course

3. To access and examine other appropriate clinical documentation and systems to ensure completion of coding within Trust timescales

4. To participate in internal training initiatives and ensure own individual professional development by attendance at external training

5. As part of this personal development to ensure broad knowledge of Clinical Coding to ensure ability to code all Specialties covered by the Trust

6. To understand the impact of coded data on the business aspects of the Trust and be able to communicate the complexities of your work to Clinical colleagues

7. To organise and prioritise own workload

8. To become proficient in the use of the Trust Patient Administration System with particular emphasis on the Coding module and the Patient Tracking module.

9. To maintain a flexible attitude and respond to job changes within the Organisation to maintain or improve the quality of the Coding service.

10. To search for and collect documentation relating to uncoded episodes during the trainee stage of the role. Assist the clinical coding support staff in their collection role.
