To have gained the necessary knowledge and skills sufficient to workindependently, with the minimum of supervision (within SOPs). To maintain personal and professional development by attending training,lectures, study days and workshops as and when relevant or as perinstructions of the Directorate Manager. Read all relevant literature provided. Maintain knowledge of operational policies and procedures through use of thedepartmental electronic notice board and document management system.Advice, Guidance and Interpersonal To deal sympathetically during liaison with colleagues, other healthcareprofessionals and staff from external organisations.

To use empathy and understanding to ensure that technical, clinical andlinguistic barriers to understanding are overcome. To report results to clinicians and other service users in a professionalmanner. To provide advice to clinicians and other service users regarding specimentypes, investigations required, appropriateness of test, timing of collection ofspecimen and turnaround times. To refer requests for assistance from other trusts who have experiencedequipment failure to qualified Biomedical Scientists.Scientific & Technical Receive and assess samples delivered into the laboratories, and sort theminto routine and emergency work.

Distribute specimens to relevant areas,prioritising urgent, clinic and labile samples. To assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples submitted to thelaboratory. Use own judgement and knowledge to reject unsuitablespecimens and requests where necessary, and enter reasons for rejectiononto Telepath computer system. To refer problematic specimens to a Clinical Biochemist or supervisor forfurther action if deemed necessary.

Accurately and swiftly enter patient demographic information and testsrequested onto the computer system. Have a knowledge of medical terms and acronyms in order to ensure thatclinical details are correctly entered to computer system. Use of Telepath computer system to gather set lists and extract informationfrom Telepath database for general telephone enquiries by staff from otherdepartments, surgeries or hospitals.Nov 2022 Prompt and accurate distribution of outgoing laboratory reports to wards,departments, GP practices and other hospitals. Scanning of request forms into computer database for storage.

To analyse, under supervision from qualified Biomedical Scientists,specimens for screening, diagnostic and clinical management of patientsusing complex, specialised and expensive equipment. To make technical assessments of method and instrument performance bymonitoring quality control used on specialist laboratory analytical systems, inaccordance with Standard Operating procedures, seeking guidance whennecessary. To perform basic troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance on specialistequipment. To refer complex problems relating to breakdown/unavailability of analyticalsystems to a suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist.

To ensure satisfactory completion of routine and specialist biochemistryanalyses. Assist Biomedical Scientists in archiving and storing completed specimens. Use Telepath and specimen tracking databases to locate archived specimensthat have work outstanding or retrospectively added. Participate in record keeping, to include fridge/freezer monitoring, reagentinventory and stock consumables control.

Defrosting of fridge/freezers. To ensure prompt referral of results that exceed action limits, to Duty ClinicalScientist, clinical staff or senior Biomedical Scientists, as appropriate, inaccordance with Standard Operating Procedures. Identify and safely bag clinical waste ready for disposal, and transfer todisposal area. Preparation of calibrators, quality control materials and reagents.

To perform basic maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of Point of CareTesting (POCT) ward based analytical systems. To monitor and control ward based POCT analysers remotely by using theRapidLink remote control computer system.
