Associate Practitioner

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Associate Practitioner at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories to join the team within the Blood and Marrow Transplant Laboratory. The Programme is in the process of implementing the NHSE commissioned CAR-T therapy service which is a complex and innovative new cancer treatment. Due to recent advances in the rapidly developing field of cellular therapy, the department is required to expand. Working as part of the team you will contribute to the provision and further development of this high-quality service.
The laboratory and designated aseptic suite are based in the new CSSB facility at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and form an integral part of the regional Cellular Therapy Programme providing the stem cell transplant service to The Clatterbridge Cancer Care Hospital Liverpool and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
The department is UKAS ISO 15189:2012 accredited, holds a HTA licence for Human Application and is currently undergoing re-accreditation with JACIE.
The post holder may, on occasions, be required to work outside of routine working hours to meet the demands of the service where necessary.
Following appropriate training, the post holder will collect stem cell harvests from the apheresis unit, and perform the thawing of stem cells for transplant within the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
The post holder will act as an Associate Practitioner within the Blood and Marrow Transplant Laboratory, providing essential support to state registered Biomedical Scientists. It is expected that the post holder will have previous experience working in a busy laboratory environment. The role will include working effectively in a GMP grade clean room facility, and although previous experience of working in a cleanroom environment would be beneficial, full training will be given. Job Summary
The post holder will act as a Laboratory Support Technician within the Blood Sciences Group, providing essential support to state registered Biomedical Scientists, performing analytical procedures to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. They will assist with the operation of highly complex automated analysers including their quality control, preventative maintenance, minor repair, and undertake manual and semi
- automated procedures under supervision from experienced Biomedical Scientists. They will also perform general laboratory duties both with and without the direct supervision of BMS staff.
Key responsibilities
Undertake specialist manual and semi-automated procedures, under supervision from experienced Biomedical Scientists.
To maintain, under the supervision of qualified Biomedical Scientists, highly complex analytical equipment in optimum operational condition, taking necessary remedial action during technical failure. Respond to error messages, referring to supervisory staff where necessary, and liaising with engineers called to failing equipment.
To enter patient demographic information, collate results and enter data into the laboratory IT systems.
To utilise necessary interpersonal skills to ensure effective liaison with service users to provide the best care for the patient.
