- **Helping students explore their study options**: Students can reach out for support in understanding the requirements and expectations of different study paths. Advisers help with researching majors, discussing academic and career goals and advising students on choosing a degree that matches their interests and strengths.
- **Assisting with class selection**: Advisers help students review their class options, requirements and scheduling considerations. This can include analysing course catalogues, giving advice on how to balance academic requirements with extracurricular interests or work commitments and helping students establish a course schedule.
- **Helping students access available resources**: Students often ask for help finding campus tutoring, counselling and library resources. Advisers usually provide information on resources, help students understand the services available to them or provide assistance with scheduling appointments.
- **Guiding students through challenges**: Students might reach out to advisers for support in addressing academic issues they may be facing. Advisers can provide study tips and strategies, help students develop a plan for completing assignments and meeting deadlines and provide guidance on how to manage stress and balance academic and personal responsibilities.
- **Planning for continued education or workforce entrance**: Advisers often help students plan their post-graduation careers. They discuss graduate school and career alternatives or help students find jobs or internships.
- **Assisting students with finding employment while in college**: Students looking for work while studying might contact an adviser for help finding jobs, writing resumes and cover letters and preparing for interviews. This support may include helping with the job-seeking process or providing advice for networking and tips for reaching out to potential employers.
- **Providing examination and assessment support**: Advisers can help students prepare for and schedule any necessary tests, such as college placement exams or graduate school entrance exams. This typically involves providing study materials and resources, helping students identify testing locations and dates and providing guidance on how to best prepare for an exam.
- **Introducing students to extracurricular activities**: Extracurricular activities can help students academically, physically and mentally while they complete their studies. Advisers can help students discover campus clubs, sports teams and other extracurriculars, helping them find activities that match their interests and connecting them with club leaders and coaches.
- **Encouraging** **good study habits**: Good study habits create the best chances of success, so advisers often support students who are struggling with getting the most out of their study time. Some topics advisers can discuss with students include note-taking, time management, task prioritisation, study schedules and using productivity tools.
