This role is for a Policy and Strategy Lead within the Strategy Team of the Office for Life Sciences (OLS) - a fast-paced and exciting directorate sitting between the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT).

Life Sciences play a pivotal role in DHSC’s mission to help people live more independent, healthier lives for longer. As a driving force behind innovation and research, this sector tackles pressing issues like dementia, cancer, and mental health by pioneering new treatments and ground breaking technologies for patient benefit. OLS plays a key leadership role in bridging the gap between the private sector, government, and the NHS, in order to support the growth and sustainability of the life sciences sector within the UK.

**Job description**:
This Strategy and Policy Lead role will be part of the Strategy, Policy, Governance and Implementation team within the Office for Life Sciences. The team works across the directorate and closely with key colleagues across DHSC and DSIT to fully realise the benefits of the directorate’s work and to achieve the goals of both departments. The team adopts a collaborative, supportive and flexible approach to establish strategic priorities and drive activities for the directorate.

This role will primarily focus on leading OLS input into key DHSC departmental strategies, such as the Major Conditions Strategy, as well as leading short-term policy deep-dives into issues like antimicrobial resistance and health disparities. The post-holder will also support strategy initiatives with wider departments, particularly the Treasury and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), on cross-cutting issues such as the implementation of the £650 million policy package jointly announced in May, life sciences clusters, and investment zones.

It will also involve leading work to enhance the team’s external-facing initiatives. This could range from fostering relationships with key leads in academia, think-tanks, and the sector, as well as crafting strategies for engagement with Parliament and international partners. This work will involve working alongside colleagues in both home departments as well as in the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

Work in a strategy team is fast-paced, exhilarating, and highly rewarding. You will be at the forefront of a mix of rapidly evolving projects addressing emerging priorities, as well as long-term policy work on high-profile issues. Drawing upon the expertise of the directorate and the life sciences sector, you will provide clear advice for senior staff in OLS, ministers, and key government departments. This role empowers you to independently lead initiatives with a significant degree of autonomy, all while benefitting from the strong support of a closely-knit team.

- Driving implementation of a £650m package of measures announced in May
- Leading input into a range of priority DHSC policy projects for the directorate
- Developing and, in some areas, leading the directorate’s strategic approach to stakeholder engagement with parliament, think tanks, academia, international governments, and the Devolved Administrations
- Developing and supporting the directorate’s strategic communications function
- Leading and coordinating complex and strategic briefings for both Departments
