The Great Western Hospital opened in 2002 following a move from the Princess Margaret Hospital elsewhere in Swindon. The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute hospital services (at the Great Western Hospital) and some community health services. As a Trust, we place high importance on staff wellbeing; you will be offered a wide variety of support to help you maintain your wellbeing and to help colleagues maintain theirs. The Trust’s Health and Wellbeing team has won a National Award during 2020 for the work they have done locally.

At the Great Western Hospital we have all of the facilities you would expect to find in a busy general hospital including an Emergency Department, delivery suite, a full range of diagnostics tests such as X-ray, MRI and CT scans, outpatient clinics and 21 inpatient wards. We provide these services in a very modern environment ensuring patient have privacy and dignity throughout their care.

Our priority for our patients, whether cared for in hospital or in the community is to provide safe, high quality health services and we have an impressive track record on issues such as patient safety and infection control.

This busy Trust employs a staff of 3,300 and care for a population of over 300,000 people. Services provided include a wide range of specialities including general and emergency medicine, obstetrics and paediatrics with many surgical disciplines.

The unit operates as a combined ICU/HDU with 12 beds. All 12 beds are in individual side-rooms and are equipped to enable ICU care in each. The unit is equipped to a high standard including modern multifunctional monitoring and state of the art ventilators. All patient rooms have natural light.

The unit undertakes many procedures specific to Critical Care such as mechanical ventilation, percutaneous tracheostomy, cardiac output monitoring, non-invasive ventilation and haemofiltration. An integrated critical care information system (CIS) has recently been installed on the unit allowing for a paperless environment.

The unit maintains an information database and is enrolled in the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Council (ICNARC) case mix programme.

There is a Matron-led Outreach Team. An ALERT course, which has been running for several years, has now been replaced by a local course called REACT. NEWS 2 and an eObs system has been introduced to identify sick patients.
