The Maternal Mental Health Service (MMHS), known as TULIP, is for women who have experienced psychological distress as a result of their maternity experience. This may be due to a traumatic birth experience, pregnancy loss, medical termination, neonatal death or the loss of a baby as a result of social care procedures due to safeguarding concerns. The trauma may also exist prior to conception, e.g. when tokophobia prevents a woman from achieving a wanted pregnancy. Women can be eligible for care from the Maternal Mental Health Service without being pregnant or having their baby with them.

Peer Support Workers are people who have lived experienced of mental health difficulties and treatment and are considered ‘experts by experience’. In the Maternal Mental Health Service experts by experience will have lived knowledge of mental illness such as depression, anxiety and/or psychosis in pregnancy or in the first year after birth.

Peer Support Workers engage with mental health service users by showing empathy, sharing experience, inspiring hope and promoting recovery. The Peer Support Workers will collaborate with service users to support their recovery journey and assist them to make patient centred choices. The Peer Support Worker will assist service users in raising aspirations and developing personal goals, and aid in increasing their individual social resources.

All members of the Maternal Mental Health clinical team work in collaboration with multiple agencies in the community. The Maternal Mental Health Service mainly works online, but also may run clinics at maternity sites, community centres as well as conducting home visits. Peer Support Workers must be able to mobilise independently using public transport or driving.

Probationary Period

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focusing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High Cost Area Supplement - London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,313 and a maximum payment of £5,436 per annum pro rata).

The successful applicant will work as part of the Maternal Mental Health Service to deliver a range of peer support activities, as part of the service users care plan. They will be compassionate, listen and offer support but can put boundaries in place and be aware of their own emotional wellbeing. They will provide support to service users in relation to their recovery. This could involve virtual meetings, travelling to patients home for face to face meetings or accompanying patients to hospital appointments.
