Head of Pshee

Brighton, United Kingdom Brighton College Full time

**Job Summary**

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a compassionate, forward-thinking and dynamic Head of PSHEE to start in September 2024.

The key aspect of the role is to shape and manage the PSHEE and RSE provision in the College, but previous post holders have combined this with leading careers provision and being involved in the safeguarding and wellbeing teams. The role is permanent, to be held alongside a teaching post with a generous timetable allocation to allow for the effective performance of the core duties of the position.

**The PSHEE Programme**:
There can be few better settings to lead a PSHEE programme than in the diverse and vibrant city of Brighton and Hove in an educational environment dubbed by The Week magazine as ‘Britain’s Most Forward-Thinking School’. We are proud of our innovative PSHEE and RSE curricula created by like-minded educators over a number of years, seeking to go beyond simple best practice and contribute in a meaningful way to the types of people our pupils are becoming.

Throughout their time at the College pupils attend workshops on ‘Active Allyship’ which specifically aim to celebrate the protected characteristics and embed them within the school DNA. As such, the PSHEE programme is a living representation of Brighton College’s ethos of curiosity, confidence and kindness.
It seeks to:

- Help pupils understand and value themselves as individuals and as responsible and caring members of society.
- Encourage self-awareness, self-esteem and self[1]confidence.
- Foster a sense of social and moral responsibility, distinguish right from wrong, respect the civil and criminal law and help pupils take responsibility for their behaviour.
- Facilitate an understanding of the contribution young people can make to both their local and the wider community through initiative, active involvement and participation.
- Encourage respect, sensitivity and tolerance of the needs and values of others; this includes an appreciation of and respect for pupils’ own and other cultures in a way that promotes tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions.
- Enable pupils to form healthy friendships and relationships and adopt appropriate behaviours.
- Equip pupils with the capacity to show initiative, make decisions and to appreciate the consequences of those decisions for themselves and others.

In short, we hope that our pupils will be growing into caring and generous human beings who understand their own individual development in the context of community and other people. The PSHEE programme will, we hope, equip them with wisdom, the art of making good decisions for themselves, not just knowledge.

**The central duties of the Head of PSHEE are to**:

- Review the PSHEE/RSE provision and consider ways, in liaison with Deputy Head (Pupils), in which the content and delivery may be amended and in which the profile and scope of PSHEE and RSE may be further enhanced.
- Engage the broader school community in the delivery of PSHEE/ RSE via communications and parent seminars, in particular harness the ideas and reflections of pupils to ensure topics, materials and speakers are relevant and appropriate.
- Annually update schemes of work in liaison with section heads, the DSL and Deputy Head (Pupils) and report to Governors, via the Deputy Head (Pupils) to ensure compliance.
- Attend Safeguarding team meetings to ensure an effective feedback loop on current issues affecting pupils.
- Organise termly PSHEE ‘Drop-down days’ for each year group, liaising with outside agencies and senior managers.
- Work closely with the Head of Biology, School Nurse and Counsellors to ensure that the medical elements of the course are effectively delivered.
- Book appropriate speakers, relevant to the Scheme of Work.
- Meet regularly with Heads of PSHEE in the Prep and Pre-Prep to co-ordinate programmes across the wider school community.
- Liaise with Section Heads over contributing to the Lower and Senior School assemblies.
- Manage and direct two deputies and a wider team of staff who deliver PSHEE/RSE content.
- Keep abreast of national and international best practice in PSHEE and RSE and aspire to develop new content.

**Safeguarding Responsibilities**:

- This role will involve daily contact with pupils, and you will be engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
- All staff and volunteers have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.
