**Individual Needs Assistant**

**The School**

Founded in 1915, St Christopher School is an independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 3-18. We have 535 pupils and 199 teaching and support staff. We have no school uniform and everyone is called by their first name. We have no religious affiliation and welcome students and staff of all faiths and none.

**Job Outline**:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Individual Needs Assistant in the junior school reporting to the junior school individual needs Co-ordinator (INCo).

**Main Purpose**

To assist in promoting the learning and personal development of the pupils to whom you are assigned tin EGP Junior School to enable them to make best use of the educational opportunities available to them.

**Specific Duties**

To support the pupils under the direction of the class Teacher and/or SENCo (for specific work programmes) in line with the Agreement to Extra Tuition Form.

To undertake structured and agreed learning activities/ programmes as planned by the class teacher/INCo.

To aid pupils to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own, in and out the classroom, for example:

- Clarifying and explaining instructions.
- Ensuring the pupil(s) is able to use equipment and materials provided.
- Motivating and encouraging the pupil(s) as required by providing levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with learning tasks as appropriate to pupils’ needs.
- Giving positive encouragement, feedback and praise to reinforce and sustain the pupil(s) efforts and develop self-reliance and self-esteem.
- Assisting in weaker areas, e.g. speech and language, behaviour, reading, spelling, numeracy, handwriting/presentation etc.
- Consistently and effectively implementing agreed behaviour management strategies.
- Monitor the pupil’s response to the learning activities and, where appropriate, modify or adapt the activities as agreed with the teacher to achieve the intended learning outcomes.
- Mark pupils’ work under the direction of the class teacher.
- Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under the guidance of the teacher.
- Support the use of ICT in learning activities.
- Be aware of, and support, difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.

Under the direction of the teacher, to carry out and report on systematic observations of pupils to gather evidence of their knowledge, understanding and skills upon which the teacher makes judgements about their stage of development.
- To use the school’s system for recording progress.
- To provide regular feedback on the pupils’ learning and behaviour to the teacher/SENCO.
- To liaise with class teacher, SENCO and other professionals and contributing to planning.
- To contribute towards reviews of pupils’ progress as appropriate.
- To develop an understanding of the specific needs of pupils to be supported.
- To work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities.
- To give written feedback on the pupil/s’ progress as requested by the class teacher/SENCo.
- To participate in the evaluation of the support programme, with the teacher/SENCo.
- To report any problems about arrangements or any incidents to the teacher/SENCo.
- To respect confidential issues linked to home/pupil/teacher/school.
- To comply with legal and organisational requirements for maintaining the health, safety and security of yourself and others in the learning environment.
- To take part in training activities offered by the school to further knowledge.

**Qualifications**
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent

**Hours of Work**

Monday to Friday 08:30 - 16:00 with half hour unpaid lunch, 37 weeks per academic year (term-time +)

**Salary**

Full Time Equivalent (FTE) based on 37 hours per week; £20,598.34 the role is set on the Support Staff Pay scale at point 16 - actual salary £15,962.64 per annum.
