Play Worker

Bristol, United Kingdom Brandon Trust Full time

South Gloucestershire

Job Summary

Support disabled children and young people at learning disability charity Brandon Trust’s holiday play schemes; it’s a rewarding role where you choose to work the days, schemes and venues that suit you.

Children enjoy fun activities at schemes that run in the February, Easter, May, summer and October school holidays in Yate, Bradley Stoke, Staple Hill and Thornbury. The play schemes operate Monday to Friday in summer and Easter school holidays and three days a week in other school holidays. Hours of work are generally 9:00am - 3:30pm, although there may be the occasional longer day.

About the role

Our play schemes are extremely popular, with plenty of activities on offer. You’ll provide a safe, stimulating environment for the child in your care, ensure activities meet their needs and encourage them to join in with others. The children have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities and autism and some individuals can also display behaviour that may be considered challenging. You’ll also support the personal needs of the child for example helping at meal times.

You’ll verbally inform parents about their child’s session and add information to the child’s personal file. You’ll also help clean and tidy the centre.

With experience some play workers go on to become play leaders. There is also the opportunity to work on our buddy scheme which supports children and young people with disabilities to attend mainstream activities during term-time in after school clubs.

About you

You\'ll have experience of engaging with children in a play environment (preferably children / young people with additional needs aged 5 to 18 years). Enthusiastic about working with children, you’re a good team player, able to use your initiative and work independently. An excellent communicator, you have ideas for children’s activities and respect their individuality. You’re also reliable and have a flexible approach.

You’ll need a good standard of education and an awareness of children’s safeguarding procedures. Qualifications in childcare, manual handling and first aid are desirable but not essential. You will need to complete our essential E-learning and safeguarding training before working.

Successful applicants will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS disclosure with Adults\' and Childrens\' barred list for Children Services, which we will cover the cost.

We are an Equal Opportunities employer and welcome applicants from all sections of the community.
