**Job summary**:
North England Forest District has a complement of 132 staff who care for 61,000 hectares of forest and 25,000 hectares of open land. Annual timber production is 550,000 m3 and there is a planting programme in excess of 3 million trees a year. The District has 45 SSSIs totalling over 10,000 ha and is a major contributor to local and national biodiversity. The District has four visitor centres at Grizedale, Whinlatter, Kielder and Hamsterley. The public forest estate in North England District attracts over one million visits per annum.

The Ennerdale and Thornthwaite beat covers roughly 5200 hectares focused on the steep mountain forests around Bassenthwaite Lake and Ennerdale Water. These include Whinlatter which sees in excess of 200,000 visitors a year and the Ennerdale Valley which is managed through the Wild Ennerdale Partnership and is one of England’s longest running and high profile rewilding partnerships and recently designated Cumbria’s largest National Nature Reserve.

Led by a Beat Forester, the team comprises of the works supervisor role and two forest crafts persons and works closely with the Recreation team based at Whinlatter. The annual restock program is around 20 to 50 ha with a wide range of mixed species being planted including Scots pine, Sessile oak and Aspen to Sitka spruce and Douglas fir and Norway Maple. There is a long term thinning program covering in excess of 100ha per annum focused on steep ground and areas managed under continuous cover. Annual clear fell programmes range from 15 to 25ha making a combined output of around 20,000 tonnes/annum. Other major work includes a 7k to 10k annual fencing programme often using helicopters to fly material to replace mountain fences, Phytophthora and tree safety management. The team is also engaged with a number of live and developing new woodland creation sites on existing Forestry England owned fell land.

**Job description**:
The post offers an exciting opportunity to work within the Lake District National Park with an enthusiastic team to manage a range of different forest and open habitats. The post will work closely with colleagues from our recreation team to deliver a wide range of diverse and varied projects.

The main responsibilities of the Work Supervisor role are to:

- Support the Beat Forester in all aspects of the day-to-day management of the beat and in planning, organising and supervising forest operations by staff and contractors to ensure agreed work is delivered safely, effectively and efficiently.
- Accurately collect site measurements and observations and use these in monitoring outcomes, assessing site conditions, updating records and informing decisions.
- Manage ordering and deliveries of essential plants, materials and consumables to work sites.
- Communicate appropriately with colleagues and all stakeholders including landowners, neighbours, contractors, customers and members of the public.
- Support the weekly Wild Ennerdale volunteer group
- Supervise all aspects of Health and Safety across the beat, promoting and improving our safety culture across all activities.

The role involves a mixture of office work and time spent in the forest. The job is varied and wide ranging, requiring close team working to continually re-balance priorities as unplanned situations arise that need dealing with whilst maintaining momentum to deliver planned programmes.

The role involves working outdoors in all weathers and includes accessing on foot remote sites in steep mountainous landscape.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Experience**
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience of woodland and forest management.
- Good understanding of health and safety issues relating to working in a forest or public access site.
- Experience of effective team working.
- Good working knowledge of MS Office packages, including Outlook, Excel and Word.

**Desirable Experience**
- Hold an NVQ Level 3 in Trees & Timber or an equivalent qualification in Forestry/Land based industry.
- Evidence of ability to develop relevant practical skills through assessed training, e.g. NPTC chainsaw.
- Supervision of staff, volunteers and / or contractors.
- Familiarity with the use of GIS mapping systems.
