The work involves both inpatient and outpatient working, supporting patients and their families during hospital admission as well as throughout their journey following discharge from hospital. The post holder will work with a variety of clinical presentations including acute emotional reactions, adjustment difficulties, parental distress, anxiety associated with hospitalisation and surgery, post-traumatic stress disorder, appearance-related concerns / distress related to scars, low mood, difficulties managing pain and difficulties engaging in physical rehabilitation.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in an established regional burns clinical psychology service and be part of a recent development in paediatric plastic surgery. It would be desirable but not essential to have experience working in an adult and/or paediatric clinical health psychology setting, working psychologically with adults and/or children with physical health problems or delivering evidence-based trauma-focused interventions

Working for our organisation

You will be part of the Department of Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology which incorporates specialisms in Paediatric Psychology, Adult Medical Psychology and Child and Adult Neuropsychology.

You will work across both hospital campuses: City Hospital (adult burns) and the Queens Medical Centre (paediatric burns and plastic surgery).

There will be opportunities for continued professional development and clinical supervision is well provided for by the Consultant Clinical Psychologist who leads the burns clinical psychology service.

We have a number of trainees from the DClinPsy courses at Universities of Leicester, Sheffield, Nottingham and Lincoln, and there would be opportunities to supervise trainees or assistant psychologists. You will also be involved in providing consultation, teaching/training and support to others within and outside of the team. The department has a commitment to clinical research. Strong support is available to conduct research and to develop your clinical research interests.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
- Completed (or due to complete in 2023) post-graduate doctoral level (or equivalent) training in clinical psychology as accredited by the BPS
- Current HCPC registration (or eligibility to qualify for registration in 2023)
- Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS/HCPC.

Desirable criteria
- Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice
- training in the supervision of other psychological professionals

Experience

Essential criteria
- Knowledge of the theory and clinical practice of evidence-based psychological therapies
- Experience of teaching/training

Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in an area of adult and/or paediatric clinical health psychology
- Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
- Experience of assessing trauma reactions and delivering evidence-based trauma-focused interventions
- Experience of representing clinical psychology within multidisciplinary teams
- Experience of delivering clinical supervision

- Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
- Ability to develop and use complex multi-media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings
- Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to distressing situations
