The Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance is committed to improving the early diagnosis of symptomatic lung cancer, whilst also overseeing the roll out of the Lung Health Checks for non-symptomatic patients.

Working alongside the GM Cancer Alliance Early Diagnosis project manager, the post holder will provide clinical leadership and expertise to this programme of work, ensuring that all partner organisations are fully aware of the programme and the impact that it has on patients and local healthcare partners.

Provide clinical and managerial leadership and have significant input into the development of the new sub-group as part of the Lung Cancer Pathway Board.

Create a clear view of the improvements needed in their area of expertise to improve the outcomes and patient experience for patients with symptoms which could represent lung cancer

Have responsibility for contributing to the delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan, in particular, supporting the ambitions related to early diagnosis

Work alongside the GM Cancer Early Diagnosis Project Manager to deliver a work program focused on identifying symptomatic patients at the earliest stage.

Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance (GM Cancer) is a venture that brings together patients, charities, NHS and academic institutions with the aim of securing world-class cancer outcomes and experience for our population. Greater Manchester Cancer is the cancer programme of the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board.

The GM Cancer Academy is a Programme of work within the Workforce and Education Programme. The team are dynamic, diligent, and passionate about supporting the cancer workforce to ensure they have equitable access to training and education to develop the right skills to respond to the needs of people affected by cancer, adapt to new, improved ways of working, continue to modernise the way they work, and embrace technology to deliver the best quality healthcare.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of cancer workforce and education in Greater Manchester, and to essentially improve outcomes for people affected by cancer.

To provide clinical leadership to the delivery and development of a new sub-group for the lung Cancer Pathway Board, dedicated to early diagnosis of lung cancer in symptomatic patients.

Roles and responsibilities

Leadership

**The post holder will**:
Act as chair for the new sub-group as part of the Lung Cancer Pathway board

Work alongside the newly appointed project manager in GMCA to deliver improvements in the early diagnosis of lung cancer in symptomatic patients across GM

Assess the long-term sustainability of the existing pilot for self-referral chest x-ray’s

Work with the project manager to plan for the roll out of self-referral chest x-rays to the remaining localities in GM

Explore other opportunities to reach the population to encourage them to act on symptoms, considering a pilot of Healthbot technology

Develop a pilot for recalling patients with persistent symptoms following a reassuring initial chest x-ray

Keep outcomes that matter to patients at the heart of the programme

Provide clinical representation at all necessary local, regional, and national meetings related to Early Diagnosis of symptomatic patients

Delivery

**The post holder will**:
Ensure that objectives are set and an accompanying work plan is developed with the Early diagnosis project manager in line with the GM Lung Cancer board priorities

Take responsibility and be personally accountable for the delivery of the clinical aspects of the work programme

Recognise, mitigate and escalate risks through the established programme governance routes where appropriate - Trusts will maintain responsibility for clinical governance within cancer services provision

Attend regular meetings with the Lung Cancer Clinical Lead and Pathway Manager to update on progress and issues for escalation as needed

Take responsibility for defining outcome measures and metrics to demonstrate that progress is being made

Promote the highest level of education and training for all health care professionals

Ensuring there is a strong focus on reducing inequality and addressing variation across the system

Service improvement

**The post holder will**:
Gain a robust understanding of the key opportunities to improve outcomes and experience by gathering and reviewing intelligence about rates of early diagnosis in different Trusts in GM

Work collaboratively with other NHS organisations to identify best practice and support its expansion across all GM trusts and thereby minimise variation in access, participation, and outcomes

Engagement

**The post holder will**:
Support full and active patient and carer involvement in the work of the programme board and demonstrate how patient and carer involvement input has been used for the benefit of local people.
