Clinical Haematology in Oxford is entering an exciting new phase with an expansion of clinical services, a new clinical trial research framework and the implementation of an Advanced Cellular Therapy service (incl. CAR-T).

An opportunity has arisen to appoint a 1.0 WTE NHS consultant to support, deliver and further develop the Oxford Myeloma service of the Oxford clinical haematology department based at the Churchill Hospital. This post forms part of an established multidisciplinary team of Clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, other allied health professionals providing myeloma care, transplantation, cellular therapy, broad range of clinical trials for Oxfordshire and tertiary services to patients living in Thames Valley. The service has received “Clinical service excellence Programme award” from Myeloma UK, patient charity and has a thriving and well-funded translational clinical research programme. The role joins a team of consultants and specialist nurses developing and providing a world class, innovative, patient focused haematology service. One day per week is in laboratory haematology supporting diagnostic services across the spectrum of haematological disorders.

Myeloma and other lymphoid disorders

The post holder will work with Myeloma multidisciplinary team, to deliver a comprehensive plasma cell dyscrasia service including high dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation. They will also be expected to work with OxCOM MGUS service delivery team within Clinical Haematology and Immunology Departments in the hospital. Activities will include:
Laboratory Haematology service provision

The Laboratory Haematology Department is within the Laboratory Medicine Directorate of Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will contribute to the laboratory haematology service with a focus on supporting routine haematology, morphology, and liaison haematology services at the John Radcliffe Hospital, as duty consultant on day per week (Monday). They will work with a team of five consultant haematologists (totalling 1.2WTE) providing routine, flow and molecular laboratory support.

The Trust comprises of four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at Churchill Hospital, in Oxford and at the Horton Hospital in Banbury, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations or outreach district general hospital clinics, including the Great Western Hospital Swindon, Stoke Mandeville, Aylesbury and Milton Keynes. Each 4-hour clinic has 2 new and 7 follow up patients; for a 42-week year, this post holder is likely to see 250 - 300 new patients
