St Austell, United Kingdom Sensory Trust Full time

Sensory Trust is launching a new inclusive climate action programme to demonstrate an innovative and exciting approach to climate repair.

Climate action programmes typically fail to encompass the insights and life experiences of disabled people who are therefore often underrepresented in climate action activities. We will work closely with the D/deaf community, blind and partially sighted people and people who are neurodivergent to develop accessible, practical steps to tackle climate change.

Activities will focus on restoring the water cycle as a cheaper, more impactful and more straightforward route to climate action than an exclusive focus on carbon. Focusing on water will empower a broader range of people to understand and actively engage with complex issues like climate change.

We will demonstrate how inclusive language and communication can inspire people to engage with climate repair. We will work with people who use British Sign Language (BSL), Braille and Widgit to create new communication materials and climate action resources to broaden the conversation and enable more people to engage. We will use plain language to reduce the complexity of climate science and create narratives that are personally meaningful and straightforward to respond to.

We are now looking for a 0.8fte Project Officer to start as soon as possible and run to the end of the project in March 2028. This role sits alongside Sensory Trust’s other work in climate action that focuses on engaging children with learning disabilities. Your focus will be working with our identified communities to develop communication materials, including films, to show climate repair in action. You will work closely with Project Managers and collaboratively with other members of Sensory Trust’s team.

This role will require the post-holder to run group activities in diverse outdoor locations, ranging from public gardens and school grounds to visitor destinations and forests. There will be some travel; particularly in Cornwall, Devon, London and Liverpool and therefore occasional overnight stays. The role will require a full DBS disclosure.

You will join the Sensory Trust team in Cornwall (registered charity 1020670). This is a UK-wide project with partners from Edinburgh University, National Wildflower Centre and Trees for Cities. It is funded by the Climate Action Programme of the National Lottery Community Fund.

**Principal duties**
- Work with our identified communities to design and test climate action resources and activities.
- Support the design and delivery of guidance, activities and resources, using Augmentative and Alternative Communication methods and languages such as BSL.
- Devise and deliver inclusive communications, working with our identified communities to co-develop films, reels and other inclusive communication materials.
- Support the independent evaluation process, collecting relevant information and liaising with partners as required.
- Build and maintain relationships and networks with the identified communities and delivery partners.
- Publicise and promote our climate action programme, e.g. sharing reels, social media posts and podcasts with relevant networks and communities.
- Maintain awareness and understanding of current developments within disability and climate change issues.
- Work collaboratively with other members of the Sensory Trust team, contributing to other projects and communicating project updates.
- Other reasonable duties as may be required from time to time.

**Important qualities**
- Ability and willingness to work with a wide range of people with an equally wide range of needs.
- Awareness of, and sensitivity to, disability and social inclusion issues.
- Understanding of climate change science, particularly in relation to the water cycle and its role in climate action.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to communicate with a wide range of people.
- Self-motivated with strong administrative skills.
- Willingness to travel, preferably with own transport and clean driving license.

**Additional information**
- We support flexible work arrangements and will endeavour to structure working arrangements to suit both the post-holder and the Trust, within the terms of the grant and the limitations of project commitments.
- Sensory Trust is a small team working in an informal environment at our office near St Austell, Cornwall, a rural location with limited public transport. We currently run hybrid working where people can work both from home or the office.
- We value professional development and would provide training as needed to undertake specialist functions.

**Applications**

**Deadline: 5pm on Friday 15 March 2024**

**Job Type**: Part-time
